Conversion of Units or Unit Conversion is a process used to represent the value of the same quantity in different units. For instance, mass can be represented in grams instead of kilograms. Unit Conversion is fundament and is used in many real-life scenarios such as for finding distance, area, length, weight, time, and much more.

In this article, we will explore the conversion of units, its definition, examples, conversion of units table, and solve some examples related to it.

What is Conversion of Units?

Conversion of units implies converting the units of a quantity from one to another according to the requirement. For example, if we measure a distance between two cities then, we measure it in kilometers, but if we measure the length of a table, we will probably measure it in meters. Similarly, depending on the condition we use different units to measure the same quantity.

Conversion of Units Definition

Representation of one unit of a quantity to another unit is called conversion of units.

We require different units of different quantities in various fields. So, it is important to study the basic conversion of units.

Conversion of Unit of Measurement Example

Unit Conversion is used widely in our daily life. Example of unit conversion include:

  • Representation of the length of rectangle in cm which is given in mm.
  • Number of hours can be represented in minutes by the help of conversion of units.
  • The quantity of a liquid measured in litres can be represented in ml by unit conversion.

Conversion of Units Formula

For converting different units we have two ways:

  • Converting smaller unit to bigger unit, or
  • Converting bigger unit into smaller unit.

If we want to convert smaller unit to bigger unit then we divide according to the relation between units. If we want to convert bigger unit to smaller unit then we multiply according to the relation between the units.

Hence, conversion of unit requires multiplication or division of the given unit as per its relation with the other units. The relation between the units can be remembered by the conversion tables. Below are the few important unit conversion tables.

Note: Unit conversion can be done under same measurements only. For instance, a unit of length cannot be converted to the unit of mass.

Solved Examples on Conversion of Units

Example 1: Convert 12 meter into kilometer.

Solution:

We know that:

1 meter = 1 /1000 kilometer

12 meter = 12 / 1000 = 0.012 km

Example 2: Convert 34 milligrams into grams.

Solution:

we know, 1 milligrams = 1 /1000gram

34 milligrams = 34 / 1000 = 0.034 grams

Example 3: Convert 90 kiloliters to liters.

Solution:

We know, 1 kiloliter = 1000 liters

90 kiloliters = 90 × 1000 = 90,000 liters

Example 4: Convert 600 seconds into minutes.

Solution:

As we know, 1 seconds = 1/ 60 minute

600 seconds = 600 / 60 = 10 min

Example 5: Convert 10 decameter into meter.

Solution:

We know that, 1 decameter = 10 meter

10 decameters = 10 × 10 = 100 meters
