The Academy Awards are one of the most prestigious awards given in the United States of America by the Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences to the top-tier movies released in the previous year. One of the other names you might know of the Academy Awards is The Oscars; the latter is much more popular worldwide. These awards are awarded for genius and fantastic movies and excellent screenwriting, acting, directing, editing, and many other criteria of film production. The Oscars are held annually with much glamour by all the most prominent names of Hollywood and other big names of the entertainment industry from different countries.

History of Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science started the Academy Awards in May 1929 as a private show at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The after-party for the awards was held at the Mayfair Hotel. Only 270 people attended the first-ever award show, and the entry fee for the audience was five dollars, which is now equivalent to around 79 dollars.

Winners were given a gold-plated statue that looked like a knight standing. There were fifteen categories to win in and surprisingly, the first ceremony ran for only fifteen minutes and in those only fifteen minutes, all of the winners were announced. However, the list of winners was already out three months before the first Academy Awards. In 1940, the Academy of Arts and Science started using sealed envelopes containing the winners’ names. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and its members are only eligible to nominate and choose winners. The Academy has been split into various branches of areas in the filmmaking process to help narrow down a winner in their area of expertise.
