Hello all, today I am going to share my first job interview experience for UI Developer.  It all started when my vacation started after giving my final exams for my diploma. Initially, I googled ‘jobs for freshers’ but it didn’t work. I browsed LinkedIn and searched for Hiring Managers. After a lot of hard work, I was unsuccessful but one glimpse of luck came and there was one job that was perfect for me: Startup, UI Developer, and no degree required. Within 0.00001s I applied for the designation and on Monday (11th July 2022) Testbook Startup HR reverted my mail and called me for a walk-in interview. TESTBOOK©  is an Ed. Tech Startup which is founded by Ashutosh Kumar along with his co-founder is situated in Navi Mumbai Kharghar.

Round 1: Coming to my First Round Interview, in the afternoon I got myself in the company along with my luck champ. The first round of interviews was taken by Pallavi Mam .She is a Developer with excellent communication skills and coding knowledge. The main process started, following were the questions they asked me:

  • What is <!DOCTYPE html> ? What will happen if you don’t give the tag?
  • What is the difference between canvas kit & SVG? Which is more efficient?
  • Make a webpage that has a Navbar, Sidebar which occupies 30% of the screen, and footer using flex.
  • What is the difference between JavaScript & JQuery?
  • Tell me about Bootstrap.
  • What is the difference between Flex & Grid Layout?
  • How do you use cookies for showing the name user entered previously?
  • When will you use GET and when will you use POST?
  • Tell me about Webpage Page Optimization.
  • Detail SASS and CSS
  • What all measures will be taken for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
  • What is Cross Browser Support?
  • Which Js framework you have used?
  • What are .amp pages in PHP?

To be honest, I answered only 2-4 questions sincerely which I don’t know, I simply replied “Sorry I don’t have any idea about this”. Then I talked about my project and some UX/UI basic principle. HR Mam loved my project and my knowledge of my colors. Round 1 was finished after an hour and I was told to wait for foe result. The onboarding HR came and congratulated me for passing Round 1. After then I was nervous along with happy, and one fun fact is I asked HR many times that “really am I cleared ?” ???? The next Day was Round 2, the whole night I prepared for it and studied in detail what was asked in Round 1. I learned SASS basics and AngularJs that day.

Round 2: The next day arrived, and I was very nervous for the Technical Round aka Round 2.  I went to the office at 2:30 pm noon and Round 2 started after some time. He was a UI Lead Developer – Khadak Khatri who will finalize my interview and was having perfect knowledge of Responsive Websites, Angular, Cross Browser Development, Webpage Optimisation, and JavaScript with SASS and Bootstrap. He was very calm and casual. Then some were the following questions he asked me.

  • What is Event Bubbling in JavaScript?
  • Create an object in Javascript.
  • How to add an alternate font in CSS?
  • How to add Browser/OS-specific font dynamically?
  • What are vendor utilities?
  • What will you do to optimize png images on the Website?
  • What is lazy loading? How to implement it?
  • What knowledge do you have regarding Angular?
  • What information do you have regarding Testbook?
  • If we hired you how will you manage your studies and work?
  • When should you use Bootstrap and when it should not be used?
  • Detail me about SEO.

After hearing these questions, I was in Upside-Down and can see my interview getting devasted. Onboarding HR came and told me they will discuss my application with their CTO. In the evening, she called me and replied positively. I was very happy and my happiness was above the sky. And discussed my duration and salary. Finally, I got placed at Testbook as UI Developer. The best thing was they explained to me the questions which I was not able to answer also the environment was lit.

So here was my interesting yet motivating experience, after having the interview I have some tips which I would like to share :

  1. Always be prepared to say ‘NO’ if you don’t know the answer
  2. Answer the questions word to word and clearly. No extra descriptions
  3. Be patient and expressionless
  4. Talk in a confident voice
  5. Use hand gestures while explaining
  6. Use eye-to-eye contact
  7. Do not talk about personal things
  8. Mute your phone
  9. Show them past projects
  10. Be very peaceful and calm
  11. Eat a banana before entering the office.

That’s it winding up my story. Have a nice day 🙂
