The term RPM stands for Revolutions Per Minute. It is used to determine the count of the revolutions any machine takes in one minute. In other words, it specifies the speed or frequency of any rotating object around a stationary axis. It can be abbreviated as rpm, rev/min, or rmin−1. With the help of this measuring unit, one can measure the speed of discs, CD players, DVDs, engines, cars, etc.

Formula of RPM

RPM = Number of Revolution / time in minutes

RPM can be calculated by dividing the number of rotations a machine makes by the time it takes to do so in minutes. For example, if the engine of a ship rotates 4000 times in 4 minutes then its rpm will be 4000/4 which is 1000 rpm.

Note:

  • Ideally, the rpm of any automobile ranges between 1500 rpm and 3000 rpm.
  • RPM is not identified as a standard unit by the International System of Units (SI).

Benefits of RPM

  • It can determine the amount of fuel burnt in operating any machine which can be beneficial in saving fuel. Hence, useful in enhancing the fuel economy of a country. For example, the higher the rpm of the car the more fuel it would burn.
  • High rpm makes the efficiency of a machine better.
  • High rpm increases the acceleration of a machine.
  • It specifies how fast a machine is moving which is helpful in maintaining the speed of a machine. For example, while driving a car one can have control over it by having an eye on this parameter.

Drawbacks of RPM

  • Higher rpm can cause more damage to the engine of a machine.
  • High rpm while working with tools like drills amplifies the probability of accidents.
  • If the rpm of an engine is very low then it can even stop it from working.

FAQ on RPM

Question 1: What is the full form of RPM?

Answer: The full form of the term RPM is revolution per minute.

Question 2: What is the RPM of a computer?

Answer: The rpm of a computer is determined by the number of spins the hard disk drive inside the computer makes in a minute. The higher the rpm of a computer the faster it will access data. The rpm of an average computer ranges between 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm. Moreover, the minimum rpm limit of a hard disk drive can be 1200 rpm and the maximum limit can be 15000 rpm.

Question 3: What is the RPM of a car?

Answer: The rpm of a car is calculated by the number of spins the piston inside the engine makes in one minute. The rpm of a car can be increased by pressing the accelerator in the car which makes the piston inside the engine rotate and hence rpm increases. The rpm of a car on the highway ranges between 1500 rpm and 2000 rpm.

Question 4: What is the RPM of a bike?

Answer: The rpm of a bike can be calculated in the same way as in cars. The normal rpm of a bike ranges between 700 rpm and 1000 rpm.
