Answer-

A tonga-driver owned Toto who kept him tied to a feeding trough. Grandfather found the monkey to be out of place here, so he decided to make the little monkey a part of his private zoo. He purchased Toto for five rupees from the Tonga driver.

Que 2. “Toto was a pretty monkey.” In what sense is Toto pretty?

Answer-

Toto’s bright eyes were full of mischief set beneath deep-set eyebrows. The elderly Anglo-Indian ladies were frightened whenever he flashed his pearly white teeth smile. His hands seem to be dried up. He had quick & wicked fingers. His tail added to his good looks & served as a third hand. He would use his tail to hang from a branch & to scoop up any delicacy that was out of reach of his hands.

Que 3. Why does grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?

Answer-

Toto did not allow his companions to sleep at night, so Grandfather decided to take him to Saharanpur. The next day, Grandfather had to leave for Dehra Dun to collect his pension in Saharanpur. He decided to take Toto in a bag along with him in a bag by train.

The ticket collector did not have any fixed fare for a monkey & could not be charged as a human being. So, he decided to categorize Toto as a dog & charge accordingly.

Que 4. How does Toto take a bath? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?

Answer-

Toto would check the temperature of the water with his hand first, then take a bath. Then he would put one foot in the water, followed by the other until the water was up to his neck. He would take soap on his hands or feet & rub himself all over.

One day a large kitchen kettle had been left on the fire to boil for tea, Toto remove its lid. He found the water to be warm enough for a bath & got in with his head sticking out from the open kettle. The water started boiling. He continued hopping up & down for a while until grandmother arrived & took him out of the kettle. This is how he almost ended up boiling himself alive.

Que 5. Why does the author say, “Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long”?

Answer-

Toto was a mischievous monkey who would tear things into pieces. When one of the author’s aunts came near him, he tried to tear a hole in her dress. One day, Toto was found stuffing himself with pullao. When the author’s grandmother screamed, Toto threw a plate at her. He then picked up the pullao dish & exited through a window. In order to spite grandmother, who had screamed at him, he threw the dish down from the tree & was delighted when it broke into a hundred pieces.

The author’s family was not a well-to-do one who could afford the frequent loss of dishes, clothes, curtains & wallpaper. Hence the author says, “Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long”.
