National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK Surathkal) Campus Experience

NIT Surathkal is a vibrant, diverse, and enriching institution that provides students with an excellent academic experience while also cultivating their passions. In this article, I will discuss various aspects of NIT Surathkal, including my academic experience, campus infrastructure, student life, and various annual events and activities.

Academic Environment

NIT Surathkal provides a rigorous academic environment with a primary emphasis on practical application. I will share my personal academic experience and schedule during this course as an MTech student. The first year of this two-year course focuses primarily on the course curriculum. During this year, courses related to the domain are taught. Depending on your field of specialisation, your workload may be heavy or average. The complete second year is devoted to project work. No courses are offered this year. During the first few months of their second year, students concentrate primarily on their placement activities. Project guides also allow students to prioritise their placement. After obtaining the placement, the students dedicate their time to their projects.

Research and Innovation

At NITK, research is an essential component of the curriculum and the teaching-learning process. With more than hundreds of ongoing sponsored research projects, the institution has attracted significant research grants from central and various state government agencies and industries. The campus has different research centres that facilitate and assures students to pursue their research with all the required resources and facilities. Some of the centres are mentioned below:

• Centre for Disaster Management

This excellent research and innovative environment was proven in its rank i.e. 12^th NIRF rank (engineering) this year.

Campus Infrastructure

The beautiful campus of NIT Surathkal features contemporary infrastructure and amenities. It features well-appointed classrooms, modern laboratories, and a computer centre. It contains both a central library and an E-library complex. The library provides a digital learning centre, which is utilised for lecture recordings and live streaming of online programmes, as well as discussion rooms and seminar halls.

There are currently 16 hostels in operation, 12 of which are for boys and the rest for girls. Along with this, 2 more hostels are constructing; one each for boys and girls, which may start functioning from the upcoming session.

Student Life and Extracurricular Activities

NIT Surathkal has a vibrant student community, with students actively participating in extracurricular activities, clubs, and events. Approximately 25 student organisations and clubs are devoted to fields such as technical innovation, cultural activities, sports, entrepreneurship, and community service. The clubs managed by the student representatives collaborate to host a variety of programmes, provide organisational support for annual events, and expose students to the foremost experts in their respective fields. These clubs help students improve their personal development, leadership, and networking skills. In addition, there is a student council that addresses student concerns and relays them to the college administration.

Festivals and Events

Numerous annual events at NITK are designed to increase student diversity. Events such as Phoenix, Engineer, Incident, Crescendo, and many others that occur at various times throughout the year allow students to discover latent talents and appreciate the essence of NITKian culture.

Alumni Network & Placement Scenario

The alumni network of NIT Surathkal is robust and extensive, spanning multiple industries and sectors. Alumni who have excelled in their careers frequently give back to their alma mater by offering advice, mentorship, and industry connections. Students at NITK have access to an abundance of internship and employment opportunities. Each year, leading multinational corporations such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Qualcomm, and many others visit our campus. Career Development Centre guides students through every step of the placement procedure and ensures that each student receives a placement with a competitive salary.
