Daimler AG Group History

Daimler AG Group is a world’s leading car and truck manufacture company. Today’s Daimler AG Group comes at this position after many historic steps. The historic steps are as follow –

  • Two engineers – Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented gasoline powered auto engine for the first time in the mid of 1880s .Benz built his first gasoline engine three wheeler car in 1885 and started selling from 1887 and Daimler built gasoline based power engine in 1883 and got the patent of three wheeler gasoline engine in 1885.
  • After the failure of three wheeler gasoline engine, Benz manufactured a four wheeler vehicle in 1990 with the help of his engineers. In the same year, Daimler established a firm Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and this firm was used to manufacture autos.
  • On that time Daimler started to manufacture luxury cars. The first produced luxury car was sold to the sultan of Morocco in 1889.
  • In 1900s, a diplomat and businessman, Emil Jellinek gave an idea to Daimler to manufacture high performance car. In return, Emil Jellinek wanted that the new manufactured car be named after his daughter name – Mercedes. Daimler agreed to Emil Jellinek’s proposal and the history of Mercedes continued. In 1901, Daimler’s Mercedes was first sold. Mercedes star emblem was registered in the year 1909.
  • Benz company started to manufacture cars as well as trucks. Due world war 1, the two rivalry company – Benz and Daimler company and their production got disrupted. So they decided to get merge.
  • In 1926 Benz and Daimler merged completely in the name of Mercedes-Benz. They started to manufacture cars under the name Mercedes-Benz. At that time they manufactured today’s popular “S” series Mercedes car. The merging company started to produce diesel engines in passenger cars for the first time and this diesel-equipped Mercedes-Benz was finally made in 1936. At that time, Mercedes-Benz became popular all across the world.
  • During World War-II , Mercedes-Benz company started to manufacture trucks, tanks and aircraft engines in German. In 1944, due to air strikes and bombings, company’s 70% plant was destroyed. However later soon they started to re-establish and got success. They again became most popular and successful as before.
  • In 1970s, the demand of Mercedes-Benz was so high in Germany and abroad which made Mercedes-Benz Germany’s largest automaker company. Mercedes-Benz established their plants in many countries outside Germany.
  • In the mid of 1980s, Mercedes-Benz company acquired some companies namely AEG AG (a maker of electrical systems, turbine engines, and radio and radar communications systems); Dornier GmbH (aerospace and medical products); and Motoren & Turbinen Union GmbH (aircraft engines).
  • In 1998, Mercedes-Benz or Daimler-Benz announced the news of merging with Chrysler Corporation, the American automaker company. The merging was done by the stock swap with an amount of more than $35 billion. On the stock market the stock was started trading under the new name DaimlerChrysler. According to the terms and conditions of the merger, they had two separate headquarters and chairmen. The official language of DaimlerChrysler was English by the agreement. In addition, the two brand identities would be kept separate i.e., no Mercedes would be sold at Chrysler dealership and vice versa.
  • In 2000, DaimlerChrysler acquired 34% of Mitsubishi Motors , a Japanese automaker company. It strengthen the DaimlerChrysler company. It became world’s third largest automaker (after General Motors Corporation and the Ford Motor Company). However the merger with Mitsubishi Motors was not profitable. In the year 2001, DaimlerChrysler sold Adtranz, a supplier of rail systems and in the year 2005 DaimlerChrysler had completely divested the Mitsubishi Motors stake.
  • In October 2007, DaimlerChrysler was renamed as Daimler AG.
  • Daimler AG became Mercedes-Benz Group AG on February 1, 2022.
