It’s no secret that beliefs and values have an impact on our attitudes, but how do they do it? The reason beliefs and values have such an effect on attitudes may be because attitudes are generally based on other beliefs. We all have certain beliefs about the world around us that shape how we view people, places, and things in our lives, including your company or brand. Our values and beliefs shape our attitudes in more ways than we may realize. As our beliefs can guide us through life and influence how we look at the world around us. Our values may also affect how we interact with others, which in turn impacts our attitude. There’s a strong correlation between the values we hold and the attitude that follows. It’s very difficult to hold certain beliefs without developing an attitude that aligns with them.

What are Beliefs?

To define beliefs, it’s easiest to break them down into two types: 

  1. Self-beliefs and 
  2. Other beliefs.

Self-beliefs are those things about ourselves; such as that we’re smart or that we’re an introvert. Other beliefs are those things about others; such as that someone is trustworthy or that someone is kind. In both cases, these beliefs act as norms for how we should behave.

What is an Attitude?

An attitude is a set of beliefs or norms that influences one’s behaviours, thoughts, or emotions toward others and objects. For example, if you believe it’s unethical to lie about another person, then your attitude would be no lying. Your actions (i.e., not lying) would follow from that belief. So, if you believe that everyone should have equal opportunities regardless of their background. Then your attitude might be equality for all.

Where do Beliefs, Values, and Attitudes come from?

People don’t start their lives with beliefs, values, or attitudes. They develop over time as a result of their experiences and external influences. For example, someone who grew up in an abusive household may be more likely to have developed negative views about marriage. But, someone who grew up watching his parents work hard at their jobs may have developed positive views about work ethic. These are two examples of many that illustrate how beliefs, values, and attitudes are shaped by experience. The good news is that people also have a great deal of control over how they shape these internal factors. This means that if you want to make changes in your life, all it takes is some effort on your part! It’s not easy, but it can be done.

The connection between Beliefs, Values, and Attitudes:

The American Psychological Association found that individuals who hold strong beliefs have more self-confidence, are less depressed, and have healthier relationships than those who don’t. This is because holding strong beliefs makes us feel secure when we face challenging situations or stressful times. It is important to note that having held beliefs and values will help you build confidence and maintain healthy relationships. It can also lead to an unhealthy outlook on life if left unchecked. If your beliefs and values begin to affect your life, then it may be time to examine them. Your set of beliefs and values should bring meaning into your life without hindering you from living up to them.

How Beliefs and Values Affect Our Attitudes:

Having strong beliefs and values is important, but when it comes to creating positive attitudes, we need more than that. We also need to be able to identify and separate our personal views from those of others around us. When we are unable to make that distinction, our beliefs and values can harm our attitudes by causing us to perceive things more than they are. The first step toward changing your attitude is to understand why you hold certain beliefs and value certain things. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to put yourself in situations where you’ll be exposed to other people who don’t share your beliefs or values. In doing so, you’ll learn new ways of thinking about different topics and will start developing an appreciation for other points of view. You might even find that your own beliefs and values shift over time as a result.

Try to Notice when Beliefs are changing your Attitude:

Sometimes it’s hard to notice when your beliefs are impacting your attitude because it happens. But, if you start to notice that something is changing your attitude, try looking at what is happening around you. If you find yourself feeling down about things that used to make you happy or angry about things that didn’t bother you before, chances are your beliefs have changed. Changing your beliefs isn’t easy but with practice, you will get better at noticing when they are affecting your attitude.

Changing Attitude by Changing Belief:

Changing one belief can have an immense impact on your attitude! think about it: If a belief is strong enough, it’ll permeate every aspect of our lives. So if we want to see a change in our attitude, we need to work on changing that underlying belief. There are many ways to approach changing a belief. One way is by using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT helps patients identify negative thoughts and irrational beliefs that are causing them distress. The goal of CBT is to help people recognize when their thinking isn’t accurate or realistic and then replace those distorted thoughts with more rational ones.

The Value of Keeping an Open Mind:

If you have preconceived notions of how things should be, then chances are that’s not going to help keep an open mind when it comes to new information or changing situations. Keep an open mind by keeping your thoughts flexible so that you can more adapt to changes around you. 

3 Tips to Keeping an Open Mind:

  1. When someone is trying to tell you something or teach you something, try hard not to argue with them about their perspective.
  2. Don’t feel like you need to know everything before making decisions.
  3. Don’t let your ego get in the way of learning something new. In general, keeping an open mind will lead to positive experiences and relationships. Because you won’t be resistant to accepting criticism from others or different perspectives from yours.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Positive thinking doesn’t help you feel good about yourself. It was proven to enhance happiness, improve health, boost performance, and generally make people happier with their lives. While positive thinking is often touted as a cure-all for life’s ills, there are still many questions surrounding its power. There have been many studies over the years that support positive thinking as an effective method of boosting mood and improving health.
