Introduction:

I recently took the graduate record examination(GRE), a standardized test required for to admission to graduate programs in various disciplines worldwide.

Preparations:

In this semester alone, I have purchased the official GRE study guides, online practice tests, and prep books from leading publishers. I also set aside time for each section of the exam to not only review the contents but also to go over each of the test-taking strategies after developing a study schedule. After scheduling regular practice sessions to improve my time management skills and become accustomed to the format, I turned to online forums for advice from seasoned test-takers and obtain useful study tactics.

Exam day experience:

I was well rested and well equipped with everything I needed, including all required identification. When I first opened the door to the examination room, I got the jitters/nervousness settled down by conscious deep breathing and inner monolog. Hence my process/experience went smoothly. I did get thrown some hard questions, notably in the quantitative section, but I stayed calm by using some problem-solving methods. I kept on time with my exam time allocation without rushing or spending too much time in one part.

Exam Results and Insights:

In conclusion, I received my GRE scores within the standard timeframe and was generally happy with my performance. The test scores were higher than my target range, although I scored poorly in the analytical writing section. My advice for future test-takers is to prepare well, preferably well in advance, and maintain a regular study schedule. Additionally, practicing with examples can boost one’s confidence and lead to better test performance. It is also important to understand that the GRE is more about testing the application of knowledge than reading and repeating. Therefore, the emphasis should always be on learning instead of memorization.

Overall, I found the experience challenging and rewarding at the same time. I am convinced that proper preparation, coupled with a positive mindset, sets the stage for success.
