Constitution Day is celebrated on the 26th of November every year. On 26th November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India. The Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950. Constitution Day is also known as the ‘Samvidhan Divas‘. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on 19 November 2015 notified the decision of the Government of India to celebrate the 26th day of November every year as Constitution Day. On 26th November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which came into effect on 26th January 1950. The slogan on Constitution Day is – “The glory of justice and the majesty of laws are created not just by the Constitution, nor by the courts, nor by the officers of the law, nor by the lawyers but by the men and women who constitute our society who are the protectors of the law as they are themselves protected by the law”.

The Prime Minister of India led the nation at 1100 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) in reading the Preamble of the Constitution. High Commissioner Mr. Ajay Bisaria led the reading of the Preamble by the officials of the Mission. He emphasized the importance of following, in letter and spirit, the noble ideals and basic principles laid down in the Preamble which is a brief introductory statement to the Indian Constitution outlining its aims and objectives. The Preamble declares India to be a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, and Democratic Republic.

The last line of Preamble of the Constitution of India is stated as:

‘IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY THIS 26TH DAY OF NOVEMBER, 1949, DO HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.’

On 26th November 1949, the constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India. The constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. Because the constituent Assembly accepted the Constitution on 26th of November, this day was Officially declared as Constitution Day by the Government of India in 2015.

Constitution Day is celebrated to promote Constitution values among citizens. The Government of India declared Constitution day to spread the importance of the Constitution and the thoughts and ideas of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
