In this digital world where technology has changed everything. Technology has made many impossible things possible. Touch of technology has turned world into magic world and Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing but one of greatest gift of advanced technology which is one of most demanding and popular technology of current situation. It has transformed world into new level. This Internet of Things (IoT) technology has great hand in making everything connected and automatic. Connection, Communication and Automation has changed human life by making it more comfortable. Application area of IoT covers most of parts starting from personal life to professional life, business to defense sector, education to medical sector, agriculture to airline etc. But now days also IoT is facing lot of challenges it may be technical, implementation, management, security etc and among them Connectivity is one of the important challenge in Internet of things. In IoT the digital devices are connected and communicate with each other through internet and in small network and couple of devices connectivity is seamless. But when IoT is deployed in global scale and number of devices and sensors connect and communicate then connectivity issues arises. And also internet is not just only network it includes heterogeneous network having cell towers, slow connectivity, fast connectivity, proxy servers, and firewalls and different companies with different standards and technologies all things that can disrupt connectivity. Connectivity is treated as one of important component of IoT as data transportation depends upon good connectivity. So now lets analyze factors for which challenges arises in connectivity in IoT technology. Below are some of the factors due to which challenges in connectivity in IoT may arise :
  1. Bandwidth : Bandwidth consumption is one of important challenges of connectivity in IoT. When bandwidth relies on cellular network then it becomes expensive, especially when thousands of IoT devices on network sending request/response signals to your server then there server issue arises so for reliability large scale server needed to handle this data and lightweight network that can seamlessly transfer data between devices and servers.
  2. Power : In small level of IoT setup may be energy efficient, but when in high level of IoT setup things becomes more complex in high performance devices where processor, displays and communication interfaces requiring varying amount of powers there power usage management becomes difficult and if energy is not efficiently managed then also connectivity may become problem. So minimal battery drain or long battery life is required along with low power consumption and required energy efficiency needs to be achieved.
  3. Signaling : Data streams in IoT are subject to variety of factors and for collecting and routing data between devices reliable bidirectional signaling is essential. Where wide range of connectivity is required and also sureness is required that stream of data is going to arrive at its destination every time. So many companies who are specialized in IoT are working to solve this type of issue.
  4. Security : It is most important in Internet of Things Connectivity. Monitoring and Maintaining security across connectivity change. Many IoT/M2M devices also comes with number of different internet connectivity options. Many pitfalls security allow hackers to access or take control of device and creates connectivity issue.
  5. Standards : There are different types of connectivity standards have in evolved so it needs to choose correct connectivity standards as per requirement which will help in avoiding connectivity issues which arises due to these IoT connectivity standards like LoRaWAN, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Wifi etc. In different IoT level deployment different types of components and/or sensors are used which are from different vendors and sometimes different components works on different standards/protocols. So if compatibility and interoperability issue arises it also becomes a factor of IoT connectivity.
  6. Presence Detection : Presence detection refers to detecting/identifying IoT device when it drops of network or goes to offline. Also it needs to track when it comes online. As because during offline some connectivity issues may arise so state of all devices in network needs to be monitored continuously and also it will help in identifying and fixing any problems that may arise with your network.
