They are herbivorous in nature. The body height of this bug is really shocking which is 100mm except for its extended legs and antennae. Their body weight is approximately 20-30 g. The longest species of Weta is 10 cm the Little Barrier Island Gaint Weta is called Deinacrida Heteracantha. 

Giant Weta is the biggest species. In 2011, the weightiest Gaint Weta ever registered was 71 grams which is three times the weight of a mouse. The actual heaviest Weta was a female and loaded with eggs but still, it is considered the largest one by insects criterion. According to research, the term Weta conveys the god of ugly things in the tongue of New Zealand’s indigenous Maori. Also, the scientific name of Giant Weta [Deinacrida] means terrible grasshoppers. Among all the species of Weta, Giant Weta is the least sociable and stagnant one.

Giant Weta is found in grasslands, grottoes, shrub grounds, and alpine areas. They are especially found in these places because they can easily find foods like fruits, blooms, and hay which they prefer to eat. Most of the life of Weta is spent finding an appropriate shelter for them. They can live anywhere like inside a concave tree or stem, the secondary hole that is made by another insect, in a hollow area found near grasslands, etc.

It is said that the species of this bug has been living on the earth for a very long period of time which is about a hundred and ninety million years. These bugs have taken a long history with them. They used to be found all over New Zealand. But, at present many species of Weta are close to extinction. The Auckland zoo has undertaken a bunch of agendas to preserve the Wetty panga or wetter starting with a unique interactive exhibit that seeks to exhilarate the following generation about insects. They have kept the 3D model of insects and some academic games too. One of the species of Weta is also shielded by the regulation Of New Zealand because they are very close to extinction.
