As we all know that there are five oceans in the world among which the Pacific is the largest and deepest ocean in the world. Its name the “Pacific Ocean” was given by explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Antarctic ocean in the south. It has a surface area of about 165250000 km2 with an average depth of 4280m but the maximum depth is about 10900m. The volume of water in the Pacific Ocean is 710000000 km3 (approx.). It is bounded by Australia and the continents of Asia in the west and America in the east. It has a length of 15500km from the Bering Strait near the Arctic circle to Antarctica through 135° latitude. It is circular in shape.

Division of Islands on the Pacific Ocean

The islands of the Pacific Ocean are divided into three categories are

  1. Melanesia
  2. Micronesia
  3. Polynesia

Islands Located in the Pacific Ocean

One of the largest islands located in the Pacific Ocean is named New Guinea. Some other islands are

  •  Guam
  • Fiji
  • Soloman island
  • Caledonia
  • Tahiti

Seas and Gulfs of the Pacific Ocean

The largest sea located in the Pacific Ocean is the Australasian Mediterranean sea of area 9.080 million km2. Other famous seas are:

  • Philippine sea
  • Coral sea
  • Yellow sea
  • Tasman sea
  • The Gulf of Alaska

Some Major Ports and Harbors of the Pacific Ocean

  • Melbourne
  • Auckland
  • Bangkok
  • Busan
  • Portland

Temperature:

The Pacific Ocean is considered the warmest ocean all over the world but the temperature of the water surface of the Pacific Ocean can vary from 29.5°F (-1.4°).

Separation of Continents by The Pacific Ocean:

It separates North America from South America and Asia from Australia.

Deepest Trench- The deepest trench in the world is the Mariana trench 11000 meters located in the Pacific Ocean.

Nature of Water in the Pacific Ocean- The water of the Pacific Ocean is salty. The Pacific Ocean contains almost half of the world’s water and it has nearly twice the amount of water as the world’s second-largest ocean the Atlantic Ocean.

Volcanoes Present in the Pacific Ocean:

The Pacific Ocean has the largest number of volcanoes present inside it and the specific area is known as “The Ring of fire”. About 500 volcanoes are present in the Pacific Ocean covering an area of about 40250km2

Effect of Pollution: Usage of chemical fertilizer near the coastal areas should be done appropriately as the excessive amount of fertilizer when entering the water bodies makes them enriched with a large number of nutrients, which enhances the growth of unnecessary plants. Thus, depleting the amount of oxygen in the water which is taken by rain to the river and through the river to the seas. Apart from that, another major reason for water pollution is oil spills, from ships, making it tough for marine animals to reach for sunlight and fresh air hence, leading to the loss of animals living in the water.

Ways to Protect Ocean:

  1. Ships that carry oil must be built strongly to avoid oil spills in oceans.
  2. Use chemical fertilizer in the correct amount near the coastal areas because it also leads to pollution of the ocean water.
  3. People should take care while strolling on the beach and should not through garbage as it eventually slips inside making the water polluted.
