Top Ten position: Norway, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Portugal and Timor-Leste.

The last three positions: The last three positions are Vietnam, China, and North Korea (All three countries belong to Asia).

• India is ranked 161 out of 180 countries with a score of 36.62. Its position slipped by 11 ranks as compared to the 2022 report( 2022 rank was 150).
• Its position is constantly falling since 2016 (Ranked 133 in 2016).
• India was positioned 169 in political indicators while it was 144 in legislative, 155 in economic, 143 in social indicators, and 172 in the safety of journalists.
• Including three other countries( Tajikistan and Turkey) India’s position has worsened from ‘problematic’ to ‘very bad’.

Reasons for the decrease in the position of India

1. Increased violence against reporters or journalists in the form of physical harm or death threats.
2. The media is politically biased.
3. The concentration of media ownership: Restriction on the free flow of information is the acquisition of media outlets by oligarchs who maintain close ties with political leaders.
4. Journalists facing extreme pressure, whether through threats, legal action, or economic pressure, may go for self-censorship (Self-censorship occurs when journalists restricts themselves from reporting on certain topics or expressing certain views to avoid backlash or harm).
