Answer: If the Earth stopped rotating then it would result in catastrophic winds, tsunamis, and shifts in climate and ocean currents causing widespread destruction.

The earth’s rotation is responsible for its shape, climate and weather change, atmosphere, day and night cycle, winds and ocean currents, tides, etc. If the earth stopped rotating then the result would be disastrous. The earth spins at an average speed of 1,670 kilometers per hour at the equator. If the earth stopped suddenly then the law of inertia would apply causing the atmosphere and oceans to keep moving at that speed thus resulting in strong winds and tsunamis. Also, this sudden halt puts extreme pressure on the earth’s crust causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

If the Earth stopped rotating then the Day-Night cycle would get disturbed. One side of the planet would be permanently facing the Sun thus experiencing scorching heat and constant daylight. On the other hand, the other side would be permanently in deep darkness thus experiencing freezing temperatures. This also disturbs the weather cycle.

The earth’s magnetic field helps in protecting the life from harmful UV rays of the Sun. And this magnetic field is generated with the help of earth’s rotation. If the earth stopped rotating then all the living beings would get expose to this hamful radiation and making most of the planet uninhabitable. Sudden stop in earth’s rotation will cause chaos inside the planet.
