Urban Waste Disposal is a subpart of the Class 12 Geography Chapter 9 which is Perspective on Selected Issues and Problems. The subpart of Urban Waste Disposal discusses the type of waste and its treatment processes for a safe environment. The urban areas are the major hub of the development of a country but there are so many problems related to the increased amount of waste. So it is important to process those waste materials. Urban waste is a type of waste which are collected from different cities and towns in solid or liquid forms. These wastes can be divided further as hazardous and non-hazardous.

In this article, we are going to discuss Class 12 Geography Notes Chapter 9 Urban Waste Disposal.

What Are The Urban Waste?

Urban waste generally includes household, industrial, and public facilities wastes that are produced as rubbish in different cities and towns. We can consider solid, plastic, metal, and paper as the waste. It is really important to dispose of and recycle urban waste to decrease the different types of pollution, maintain hygiene, and make our lives more sustainable.

Methods Of The Urban Waste Disposal

There are four major processes of the Urban Waste Disposal which are majorly generated from the residential and industrial areas. Let us discuss.

Incineration Disposal

Incineration is a well-known process of the Urban Waste Disposal. It is the process of generating the energy from the urban wastes. The process is able to reduce the quantity of the waste by around 70 % with 90 % volume. But the problem is, that this process involves the process of burning that produces ash and greenhouse gases.

Composting Disposal

Composting is a process to reduce the waste volume by killing the pathogens present in it. The process reduces the amount of leachate generation and makes it a nonharmful material. We have to remember that the process of composting is only applicable for the organic waste only.

Construction and Demolition Waste Disposal

Hard and Concrete wastes are the major source of urban waste. This type of solid waste is continuously produced in urban locations due to construction works. This type of waste is majorly deposited in landfills and needs to manage these wastes for a sustainable environment.

Ceramic Waste Disposal

Ceramic wastes are no-recyclable in nature and majorly they are sold. These types of waste materials create so many problems in the landfills. It would be really helpful if these types of wastages could be recycled to the new products. These new products can be reused as the materials for the different construction projects.

Effect Of The Urban Waste Disposal

There are so many effects of the Urban Waste Disposal as mentioned below.

  • Bad and inefficient waste management systems can affect our health due to the different unhygienic conditions.
  • Urban waste contains so many disease factors like blood infection, respiratory problems, reproductive problems, and skin problems.
  • These types of wastes cause so much pollution like water, air, and soil.
  • The harmful chemicals affect the air, soil, and water. They contaminate this natural substance and make them also harmful to lives.
  • The waste materials also contribute to the global climate change.

Conclusion

Class 12 Geography Chapter 9 talks about the Urban Waste Disposal. Urban waste generally includes household, industrial, and public facilities wastes that are produced as rubbish in different cities and towns. There are four major processes of the Urban Waste Disposal which are majorly generated from the residential and industrial areas. Bad and inefficient waste management systems can affect our health due to the different unhygienic conditions. In this article, we have learned about the Urban Waste, Its Disposal Methods and Different Effects in details.

Urban wastes include wastes collected from residential and industrial areas of towns and cities. They can pose serious health risk hazards if not managed or collected properly.

What are the causes of urban waste disposal?

Some of these problems include overcrowding, congestion, inadequate planning, and lack of facilities for a large population. All these together result in unsanitary conditions and poor air and water quality. Generally, two kinds of urban waste are generated, solid and liquid waste.

What is urban waste disposal?

Urban waste is defined as solid waste collected by or on behalf of municipal authorities and disposed of through the waste management system. Urban waste waters impact on waters both in terms of biodegradable material and the addition of nutrients, which contribute to eutrophication.

What are the problems of urban waste disposal?

Disposing industrial wastes into rivers and water bodies in turn causing water pollution. Soil pollution due to seepage of chemicals, which may come about due to improper disposal of wastes. Fear of spreading diseases due to air pollution and bad smell from urban waste.

What are the effects of urban waste disposal?

There are so many Environmental impact of it. If not properly managed, urban waste disposal systems can have negative environmental impacts, such as soil and water contamination, air pollution, and other environmental hazards.

How does urban waste affect the environment?

Poor waste management – ranging from non-existing collection systems to ineffective disposal -causes air pollution, water and soil contamination. Open and unsanitary landfills contribute to contamination of drinking water and can cause infection and transmit diseases.

What are the methods of waste disposal?

There are many types of waste disposal methods; Landfill, waste compaction, incineration, biogas production and vermicomposting are the popular methods for disposing waste to keep a clean environment.
