Trial Balance format is prepared with columns of Particulars, Ledger Folio, and Debit and Credit balances. Trial Balance is basically a statement where all the debit balances of journal entries and ledger postings are recorded on the Dr. balance column of the trial balance, and all the credit balances of journal entries and ledger postings are recorded on the Cr. balance column of the trial balance. These postings are recorded in the trial balance to verify and check for the correctness of the journal entries and ledger postings.
According to Carter – “Trial Balance is the list of debit and credit balances, taken out from ledger. It also includes the balances of cash and bank taken from the cash book.”
We will discuss the items of the format one by one:
- Particulars: The name of the concerned account whose balances are to be shown in the trial balance is mentioned here.
- Ledger Folio or LF: Ledger Folio shows the number of the page on which the ledger account of that particular account is made.
- Amount (Dr.): The debit total or debit balance of the concerned account is mentioned here.
- Amount (Cr.): The credit total or credit balance of the concerned account is mentioned here.
