Nissan Ends Production Of Datsun In India

Synopsis: The company has confirmed the move through a statement in which it has said that it is stopping the production of Datsun redi-GO at its Chennai plant which is named 'Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd'. However, it will continue the sale of the mentioned model till it has the existing stock.

Japanese auto giant Nissan on Wednesday announced that it has decided to discontinue the company’s brand Datsun in India. The company has reportedly taken the step over declining sales of the cars. Nissan will stop production in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. However, the company has clarified that it will continue to sell the model until it has the stock.

After the major step, the brand will only be available in a handful of countries. Notably, India is the world’s largest small cars market, however, it was never a volume generating market for Datsun. The company had moved out of Russia and Indonesia, now from South Africa and India. The mentioned countries had been key markets of the brand.

The company has confirmed the move through a statement in which it has said that it is stopping the production of Datsun redi-GO at its Chennai plant which is named ‘Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd‘. However, it will continue the sale of the mentioned model till it has the existing stock.

Adding to the statement the company has assured the existing customers. It mentioned that the existing and the future customers will be its priority and in order to ensure the same the company will continue to provide after-sales services, parts availability, and warranty support from the company’s national dealership network.

Nissan had already halted the production of its two other models under the brand Datsun named ‘Go’ which is an entry-level small car and ‘Go+’ which is a compact multi-purpose vehicle. The company’s discontinuation of the Datsun brand is a part of the company’s global strategy that it has announced in 2020.

Mentioning the company’s global transformation strategy, Nissan India in its statement has said that it is focusing on its core models and segments that have the ‘most benefit to its customers, dealer partners, and business. Reportedly, it has been further said that in India the strategy includes the locally-produced Nissan Magnite which has over 100,000 customer orders to date.

The company’s global transformation plan also included its exit from Russia in order to streamline the business and operations in some markets in the region of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). The company also stepped out of Indonesia, stopping the manufacturing operations in the country.
