Giving another level to the user rating experience subscription-based OTT (Over The Top) streaming platform, Netflix announced the rolling out of a Two Thumbs Up button to rate the content users are watching. The newly introduced option of ‘Two Thumbs Up’ will convey that the users are ‘really interested‘ in the content they have rated. The Two Thumbs Up rating will start working on the on-demand streaming platform today and it could be spotted next to the existing Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down options on the TV, Web, Android, and iOS mobile devices.

Christine Doig-Cardet, Director of Product Innovation, Netflix, said in a blog post,

Our current Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons are a good way for you to tell us how you feel about a series or film, and in return, you get a profile that’s better personalized to your taste. However, we’ve learned over time that these feelings can go beyond a simple like or dislike.

Christine further mentioned that the Two Thumbs Up option will be an addition to enhance the content personalization according to the user as it will help the platform to understand better about their taste and following that, they’ll be able to give better suggestions.

Adding that a Thumbs Up is still applicable as a form of liking content such as a movie or a series in order to make recommendations, she stated, “Consider Double Thumbs Up as a way to fine-tune your recommendations to see even more series or films influenced by what you love.”

The Director of Product Innovation of Netflix has also mentioned that the Double Thumbs Up will tell the platform about which movie or series you ‘loved’ and it will help Netflix to be more specific while suggesting or recommending you a show, movie, or a series.

The company had reportedly adopted the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons by removing the five-star rating system in 2017. Hinting at how the Two Thumbs Up option may work, Christine gives an example of Bridgerton saying, “If you loved Bridgerton, you might see even more shows or films starring the cast, or from Shondaland.”

Interestingly, battling the issue of multiple people using a single subscription, Netflix announced to charge an extra fee from users for sharing the same subscription outside the household. It was announced as a tester beginning from three countries named Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.
