Some facts about Indian Railways:

  • Indian Railway has joined a  railway club that includes China, Russia, and the United States, which transport more than a billion tons of freight annually. 
     
  • According to the Acworth Committee in 1920-21, India’s railway finances were separated from public finances in 1924. 
    In 1994, the first live broadcast of the railway budget took place. Recently Railways and General Budget were merged. 
     
  • India’s fastest train successfully completed a  160 km/h test on the Delhi-Agra route in just 90 minutes. In 2000, Mamata Banerjee became the first woman to become Minister of Railways. She holds the record of being the only woman to table the railway budget for two different governments in  Parliament. 
     
  • The Gatimaan Express (New Delhi-Agra) is the fastest train in India currently in operation. 
     
  • The Mettupalayam-Ooty Nilgiri passenger train is the slowest train, running at an average speed of 10 km/h. 
     
  •  New Delhi railway station has the largest trackside relay interlocking system in the world. Indian Railways is the seventh largest employer in the world with more than 1.4 million employees. 
     
  • The platform at Gorakhpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh has become the longest in the world at 1,366 meters.
     
  • Indian Railways is building the world’s highest railway bridge which is taller than the Eiffel Tower.
     
  • The longest tunnel is Pir Panjal which links Kashmir Valley with Banihal in Jammu.
     
  • Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta is the station having the longest name.
     
  • Four areas of the Indian Railways i.e Darjeeling-Himalaya Railway, Nilgiri Mountain, Mumbai CST, and Kalka-Shimla Railways have been designated “World Heritage Sites” by UNESCO.
     
  • The Nationalization of Indian Railways took place in 1951
     
  • Indian Railways is the second largest network in the world and the largest railway network in Asia.

Railways Budget 2022-23:

  • The national transport will develop new products along with efficient logistic services for small farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises, and will promote the integration of Indian and postal railway networks to provide seamless solutions for parcel transportation, FM said.  
     
  • In addition, according to Sitharaman, the concept of “one station, one product” is being popularized to help local businesses and supply chains. 
     
  • As a part of the Modi government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, 2,000 kilometres of the rail network will be placed under Kavach, the world-class indigenous technology for safety and increased capacity, in FY2022-23.  
     
  • In the next three years, up to 400 new-generation Vande Bharat Express trains with better energy efficiency and better ride experience for passengers will be designed and manufactured, the minister announced.  
     
  • In addition, 100 cargo terminals will be developed by PM GatiShakti for multi-modal logistics facilities over the next three years, Sitharaman explained in his budget speech.  
     
  • The finance minister said that innovative forms of financing and faster implementation will be promoted to build large-scale subway systems of the appropriate type. Multimodal connectivity between urban mass transit and train stations will be facilitated as a priority. She said the design of the subway systems, including civil structures, will be refocused and standardized for India’s conditions and needs.
