The country named Kenya is located in the eastern part of Africa. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria. Whereas, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda are a few of its neighboring countries. It possesses an immense variety of landforms, from highlands to glaciers, which supports abundant and varied wildlife of scientific and economic value. It is traditionally recognized for the Great Wildebeest Migration as well as the Big Five. 

Like several other countries, Kenya also has many foods which are famous all over the world, but the most popular foods in Kenya are Nyama Choma and Githeri. Kenya has a very diverse and rich history in terms of its foods. Ugali which is called unga when raw is a maize cake that is the most popular food in Kenya. It is in general offered as a white stiff porridge, which is pleasant for plunging in stews. A dish named Nyama Choma is a Kenyayi dish that is made from roasted beef or goat and is cooked over an open fire. It is usually enjoyed with Ugali. Thus, some of Kenya’s well-known foods are as given below:

1. Nyama Choma (Grilled meat): It is a specialty of grilled beef or goat meat. This roasted dish is very popular in Kenya and is also considered a national dish in Tanzania. This dish has some serious consistency to it, where one can actually taste and feel the grains of a goat that has been running and munching on grass and grazing in Africa. One of the reasons behind its great taste is that it is slowly grilled using charcoal or over an open fire and is best served with kachumbari and ugali.

2. Ugali: It is additionally called sima, which is a type of oatmeal of stiff maize flour which is surely the national food in Kenya. It looks like polenta which is Italian raw cornmeal and is very easily found on each and every Kenyan menu. It is highly recommended to one who is visiting Kenya for the first time. If we talk about its ingredients then it generally consists of maize flour(cornmeal) and is made by constantly mixing cornmeal with hot water with a continuous supply of heat until it reaches a dough-like consistency.

3. Kachumbari: It is the most delicious salad in Kenya. It is so luscious dish that no one can avoid. It is very popular in the cuisines of the African Great Lakes region. It is an uncooked salad dish that is usually made up of fresh ripe chopped tomatoes, onions, chili peppers, lemon juice, and coriander. It is generally used as a side dish (salad) for the main meal.

4. Pilau: It is also known as Pilaf is a wheat dish or in some regions rice dish. It is cooked in bowls or stocks by adding some spices and other ingredients like vegetables or meat and also employing some techniques for achieving cooked grains that do not stick to each other. The major ingredients used in this dish are rice, spices, meat, stock, vegetables, dried fruits, and many more.

5. Chapati (Flatbread): The majority of people here call it roti, roti, phulka, and many more. It is a flat thin bread that was invented in the Indian subcontinent. Like pilau, they are also prepared on special occasions or when one has guests in the house. These are made from rolled-out dough of flour which is then made into a coil shape and then is rolled into an even circle. Which is then fried on a frying pan along with a lot of oil in order to make it extremely crusty around the ends yet misty as well as soggy from the insides.

6. Githeri (Boiled corn and beans): Generally eaten as a main course, It is a simple, nourishing dish that lies at the door of the Kikuyu community in Kenya. It is a Kenyan traditional meal of legumes and maize, which consists of mostly beans of any type mixed and boiled together. It is also known as mutheri or muthere. The corn and beans are boiled and then fried to make githeri a very delicious food. It is usually offered with either chapatis or rice.

7. Ingoho: It is a famous Kenyan poultry dish consisting of a chicken cooked by the Luhya people of western Kenya in the Luhy-style. This dish has its own value and is served only if Luhyas consider you an important visitor. It is prepared with traditional methods which involve roasting a whole chicken to give it a nice brown color and then served for eating. Moreover, modern Ingoho is generally steamed with tomatoes, onions, and spices and then served to eat.

8. Mukimo: It was basically invented in the central part of Kenya, it is a Kenyan meal that is prepared by crushing potatoes and green vegetables and sometimes also includes maize and beans. In Nairobi, one must try mukimo. It is said that on occasion can be complete without mukimo. It is assigned to the Kikuyu people.
