How Point To Point Protocol Works?

Answer: Point to Point Protocol also known as (PPP), it is a protocol that operated at data link layer to connect network devices. Point to point protocol makes use of CHAP, LCP and NCP protocol.

Below is the working of Point to Point protocol:

Step 1: Initiation and Physical Connection

One node in the communication, initiates a connection request to the other available node in the connection, and establishes a physical connection over the communication medium.

Step 2: LCP Negotiation

LCP stands for Link Control Protocol and is responsible for the creation, maintenance, configuration and termination of links. The two available nodes in the communication exchange the packets to negotiate connection parameters.

Step 3: Authentication

Once the connection is established, the nodes in over the network, authenticate with the help of protocols such as PAP (Password Authenticate protocols), and CHAP (Challenged Handshake Authentication Protocols).

Step 4: NCP Negotiation

After connection is established and authenticated the next step is to connect the nodes to the network layer. To connect with the network layer and configure other network settings, PPP makes use of Network Control Protocol (NCP).

Step 5: Data Transmission

After connection with the network layer, data is encapsulated into PPP frames and is being transmitted between the nodes available in the communication.

Step 6: Termination

After the transmission of data, the connection is terminated and the allocated resources are released accordingly.

Point to Point protocol works at the data link layer for connection and transmission of data between two available communicating nodes thus by making use of different protocols such as CHAP, LCP and NCP protocol.
