I recently went through the interview process for an Automation Engineer position at HCLTech. The interview process was conducted offline, which was a great experience because I got to meet people in person and see the workplace environment.

Application and Initial Contact

I applied for the job through the HCLTech career portal, emphasizing my automation experience and proficiency in tools like Selenium, Jenkins, and Python. A few days later, I received a call from HR to schedule an in-person interview at their Bangalore office. The HR representative was polite and explained what to bring, where to go, and what to expect during the interview day.

Arriving at the Office

On the interview day, I arrived at HCLTech’s Bangalore office and found the atmosphere welcoming. The reception staff was friendly, and the wait was short before the interview process began. It was great to see the workplace and get a sense of the company’s environment.

Technical Evaluation

The first interview was a technical session with an engineering lead. It focused on my experience with automation tools and problem-solving skills. These are some of the questions I was asked:

  • How would you create an automated script to test an e-commerce checkout process?
  • What steps would you take if an automated test failed to run correctly?
  • How do you keep your automated tests maintainable and scalable over time?

The interviewer also asked me to write a simple Python script to solve a problem. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but the interviewer was patient, allowing me to think through my answers.

Soft Skills and Teamwork

The next part was a behavioural interview with a team lead. This session was more about understanding my interpersonal skills, teamwork, and how I approach challenges. They asked me questions like:

  • Tell us about a challenging project with tight deadlines. How did you handle it?”
  • What do you do when you face a problem you can’t solve alone?
  • How do you stay updated with new automation technologies?

The team lead was friendly, which made it easier to discuss my experiences and ask questions about the team dynamics and company culture.

Final Impressions

Overall, the interview process at HCLTech in Bangalore was smooth and well-organized. The in-person format helped me connect with the interviewers and understand the workplace culture. If you’re preparing for a similar interview, I suggest honing your technical skills and being ready to discuss your experience with teamwork and problem-solving.
