Dynamic spectrum Sharing (DSS) is a new emerging technology that allows flexibility to mobile operators for switching between low, mid, and high-band frequencies. It allows both 4G and 5G to share the same spectrum. DSS uses the Software-Defined Radio (SDR) technology, which allows the behavior of communication devices to be redesigned through software updates. SDR allows the required allocation of spectrum without changing any hardware component.

We can understand this through an example, if any person(operator) wants to upgrade his 4G mobile network into a 5G mobile network then DSS allows smooth migration of spectrum resources from one technology to another. Advantages of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing

  • Speed: 5G networks are faster than 4G networks. It becomes easy with DSS technology to update from 4G to 5G as it does not require much effort or any changes in infrastructure. So, DSS technology helps 5G reach more users faster than traditional radio hardware upgrades.
  • Increase in Performance: The increased speed of any device is directly proportional to the high-speed network connection. DSS technology also helps in increasing performance along with speed.
  • Cost: Enabling 5G through DSS helps commercial carriers reduce the cost of upgrading their service. That’s why DSS technology is more widely preferred by organizations and industries for upgrading their network services.

Disadvantages of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing

  • Resource Overhead: DSS introduces additional resource overhead on the network infrastructure. This increases the complexity of the overall infrastructure. This overall increase in resources may reduce the efficiency and performance of the network.
  • Security: Dynamic spectrum sharing introduces additional concerns of security. The reformation inside systems through software updates raises concerns about potential vulnerabilities.
  • Complexity of Implementation: Implementing DSS technology requires software-defined radio (SDR) technology which has a complex algorithm for real-time spectrum management. The complexity of this system increases challenges at many steps during implementation.
