Stockholm is Sweden’s capital and is considered one of the largest cities in Scandinavia. The old capital of Sweden was Gamla Uppsala. History of Sweden

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, was founded in 1252 by Swedish ruler Birger Jarl and was extensively built by him. As a consequence of a commercial arrangement with the German city of Lübeck, it flourished quickly. This agreement gave Lübeck merchants the ability to trade in Sweden without paying customs duties and the right to dwell there. In 1436, the city was formally designated as the Swedish capital.

After years of battle between the Danes and the Swedes, Gustav I Vasa freed Stockholm from Danish sovereignty in 1523. In the mid-seventeenth century, Stockholm grew quickly when Sweden briefly became a major power. The city became an independent administrative unit after the central government ministries were relocated there. New neighborhoods rose north and south of the “city between the bridges” when demolished old city walls.
