Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. But, before we get into the details of Kyiv, let’s talk a little bit about Ukraine. Ukraine which shares its borders with Russia, Poland, Belarus, Slovakia, Romania, and Moldova is an Eastern European country. It is the 2nd largest country in Europe after Russia. Ukrainian hryvnia is the currency of the country. Currently, the war-torn nation is famous for mostly famous for its architecture, culture, and tradition. Although Ukraine is one of the poor countries in Europe, it provides quality education at a low cost.

Situated along the Dnieper River, Kyiv which can also be written as ‘Kiev’, and is the capital of Ukraine, is the most populated city in the country with allegedly having 3.5 million people by 2021. The city has an area of is 839sq/km. It is known as the hub of industries, science, education, and culture in the Eastern European region. The city is the political center of the country.

Weather Pattern of Kyiv

Kyiv has a modest continental climate. Here, the residents experience warm weather during June, July, and August when the temperature reaches, 13.8 to 24.8 °C and Fahrenheit, 56.8 to 76.6 °F. Apart from that, the coldest months in Kyiv are December, January, and February, with temperatures going down to −4.6 and −1.1 °C and 23.7 to 30.0 °F (Fahrenheit).

The freezing temperature during winter is pretty common in the country, while the temperature even stays at 21 °F (−6 °C). The average temperature in January is 21 °F (−6 °C), and in winter days with temperatures, more than freezing are not uncommon. In cold spells with a northerly or northeasterly airstream, temperatures may fall sharply, and a minimum of −27 °F (−33 °C) has been tracked. Snowfall lies usually from mid-November to the last of March or even it begins from October and stays till April.

On average, the frost-free period lasts 180 days however, sometimes it surpasses 200 days. Summers are hot, with an average temperature in July staying at 68 °F (20 °C). The maximum temperature in the July month that is recorded till now is 102 °F (39 °C). The usual rainfall that is recorded in the city till now is 25 inches (635 mm). Kyiv receives maximum rainfall in June and July.

Geography of Kyiv

Kyiv is divided into several administrative wards and it covers an area of over 300 square miles (780 square km) along both the banks of the Dnieper river. The Ancient Upper Town of the city is the focal point that surrounds the high bluffs of the river. The city cherishes its old street patterns despite postwar constructions and has most of the historical and architectural monuments. Built in the 11th century, Saint Sophia Cathedral is among the oldest structures in the city and is the finest and most attractive example of early Rus-Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture.

Culture and Traditional Cuisines of Kyiv

The city is named after Kyi and is known for its archaeological culture dating from the 3rd to 5th centuries. Interestingly, Ukraine celebrates two Christmas. It recognizes December 25th as an official holiday and celebrates traditional Orthodox Christmas on 7th January. Some popular traditional cuisines of the city are, Borscht with garlic fritters, Chicken Kyiv, Potato pancakes, Salo, Vareniki, Stuffed cabbage rolls, and Okroshka.

Tourist Places

The Holy Dormition Kyiv Caves Lavra: This is a cave monastery whose foundation is dated back to 1051. It is among the holiest places in the country and it is the burial ground for monks.

Rodina Mat (Motherland): This is a 62-meter-long monumental statue standing upon the main building of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine.

Andreyevskiy Spusk: This is among the main attractions of the city which connects Kyiv’s Upper Town neighborhood and the historically commercial Podil neighborhood. The place is also referred to as “Montmartre of Kyiv”. Andreyevskiy Spusk is quite popular among tourists and the government has named it on the list of national landmarks by the government resolution.

Saint Sophia Cathedral: Saint Sophia Cathedral is situated in Kyiv and also is the monument of Kyivan Rus. This is the city’s well-known landmark and the first legacy site in Ukraine to be listed on the World Heritage List.
