The New York Times reports that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has announced yet another wave of layoffs. YouTube is the latest division to go through a restructuring process. Roughly one hundred people have lost their jobs at YouTube due to the recent round of layoffs at Google, affecting several divisions. In addition to expressing regret for having to inform personnel of this decision, the group sent an email stating that those impacted would get severance money.

In a private memo, Mary Ellen Coe, YouTube’s chief business officer, told the company’s workers that 100 jobs were being cut. These cuts are part of changes to YouTube’s business and creator management teams to make them more efficient. The employees of these teams were officially informed about their termination. Also, they have a tenure of 60 days to seek new opportunities within the company.

The impacted employees have yet to have a guaranteed place on YouTube, even though they can apply for other roles. It highlights the issues the firm faces in the present business atmosphere.

Google announced the termination of more than 1,000 employees last week across several departments, such as core engineering, Google Assistant, and hardware teams that make products like Pixel phones and Fitbit watches. Google said these layoffs are part of ongoing organizational changes that began in the second half of 2023.

Google’s CEO, in a conversation, states to his employers that more layoffs might happen this year, but they wouldn’t be as big as the ones that occurred last year. These organizational shifts are driven by Google’s determination to make responsible business decisions and the company’s ability to respond to substantial opportunities in the future.

There has been a general tendency in the tech industry toward layoffs, and Google and YouTube are included. The year marked a tremendous hike in the layoff announcements since the beginning of the year. Staff cuts have been made by Discord, Amazon, Xerox, Unity Software, and other companies, showing the problems the industry is facing.

YouTube makes most of its money from ads; since late 2022, ads have been slowing down. It has been difficult for the organization to cope with the consequences of this. Even though the platform’s income has been going down for a few quarters, it plans to get back on track by focusing on YouTube TV subscriptions, which offer alternatives to standard cable programs.

Conclusion

With every growing stage of the organization, it is significant that it is run well and meets all user’s needs; Coe communicated with the workers. The employees terminated from the company are offered the opportunity to apply for other positions. “However, it remained unclear whether new positions within the organization are assured for them.”

Coe further says that every team worker is essential and valuable to us. We are here to help them with their career orientation next.
