World Population Day is an event celebrated on July 11 all across the globe to create awareness of the issues related to the global population. It was first celebrated in 1989 by the Governing Council of the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme). Let’s read about this event in detail.

What is World Population Day?

World Population Day is an event organized every year in July to raise awareness of the rising population explosion, causing environmental, economic, and developmental damage to the country. The event is celebrated every year concerning a different theme. This event was started by authorities of the United Nations development program in 1989. Dr. K.C. Zachariah was the one who suggested the day and during that time the population was around five billion when he used to work as Sr Demographer at the World Bank.

When is The World Population Day Observed?

The authorities that govern the United Nations Development Programme observed World population day in 1989. World population day is celebrated on 11th July globally to generate awareness of the rising population issues, including their impact on the environment and development. World population day was initially marked on 11 July 1990 in around 90 countries.

World Population Day Celebration

Each year a new theme is set up for this important event. Every year on 11th July, World Population Day, there is a public holiday dedicated to focusing on population issues. We can see through current estimates that, how speedily the population is increasing. Even the declining fertility levels will not help control the tremendously growing population. World Population Day is significant for every country’s development and environment, it reminds us about the harm of rising population issues. It took thousands of years for the world to cross its population of more than 1 billion. But if you look at the current scenario, the population is increasing, and we can expect more than our current population to grow sevenfold in just another 200 years. 

The Theme of World Population Day 2021 

Since 1990 the event of World population day has been celebrated every year. The theme of World population day is kept different every year. These themes are mainly concerned with public welfare or focus on controlling the rising issues of the population. The year 2021 was affected by a pandemic, so the world population day theme for 2021 was the “consequence of the covid 19 on the fertility rate.” It was aimed to shed more light on the effect of pandemic covid 19 on sexual and reproductive health and behavior across the globe.

World Population Day 2015

Like every year, World population day was also celebrated in 2015 on the same day of July. A specific theme is selected for the event each year. Similarly, In 2015, a theme was also selected based on public or country welfare. The theme of world population day 2015 was “unsafe populations in emergencies bringing out the necessities of women and immature girls during disputes and humanitarian disasters“.
