About Burj Khalifa:

The outside of the Burj Khalifa was completed in 2009, five years after work began. Its primary structure is reinforced concrete, with structural steel from the old East German parliament used in the construction. It was completed in 2010 as part of the Downtown Dubai development.

The decision to build the building was based on the government’s desire to diversify from an oil-based economy and gain international recognition. Dubai’s government succeeded as the structure broke numerous records, including the title of the World’s Tallest Building.

The Burj Khalifa was built by a team led by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Design of the project was overseen by NORR Group Consultants International Limited, with Hyder Consulting serving as the supervising engineer.

Islamic architecture, such as the Great Mosque of Samarra, has influenced the design. The three-part Y-shaped floor plan is designed to maximize both residential and hotel space. The structure also has a cladding system designed to withstand the hot summer temperatures in Dubai. It has 57 elevators, which run at the speed of 22mph, and eight escalators in total.
