Investing in the stock market often involves opening a demat account to hold your shares electronically. Zerodha, a popular Indian brokerage firm, uses the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) as the depository for its clients’ demat accounts. When you open a demat account with Zerodha, you’ll receive a unique identification number called a BO ID.

What is a BO ID?

BO ID stands for Beneficiary Owner Identification Number. It’s an 8-digit number assigned by CDSL to uniquely identify your demat account held through Zerodha. This number acts like your account number within the depository system.

Structure of Your Demat Account ID

While the BO ID itself is 8 digits, your overall demat account ID might be 16 digits. This 16-digit number is a combination of your DP ID and BO ID.

  • DP ID (Depository Participant Identification Number): This is a unique ID for Zerodha as your depository participant (DP). It remains the same for all Zerodha clients and is usually 12081600 or 12081601.
  • BO ID (Beneficiary Owner Identification Number): This is the 8-digit unique ID assigned specifically to your demat account.

How to Find Your BO ID in Zerodha?

There are two ways to find your BO ID in Zerodha:

1. Zerodha Kite Platform (Website or Mobile App):

  • Login to your Zerodha Kite account.
  • Click on your client ID visible in the top right corner.
  • Select “My Profile” from the menu.
  • Under “Account Details,” you’ll find your DP ID starting with 12081600. This is your CDSL BO ID.

2. Zerodha Console:

  • Visit https://console.zerodha.com/.
  • Click on “Account” from the menu.
  • Select “Demat” from the submenu.
  • Your BO ID and Demat account ID (including DP ID) will be displayed.

What is Use of BO ID?

Your BO ID is an essential piece of information for various demat-related activities, including:

  • Applying for Initial Public Offerings (IPOs)
  • Authorizing your holdings for certain transactions
  • Resetting your CDSL TPIN (Transaction PIN)

Important Note: If you opened your Zerodha demat account before September 15th, 2015, your account might be held with IL&FS (another depository participant) instead of CDSL. In that case, your DP ID will be different (IN300095).

By understanding your BO ID and its role in your Zerodha demat account, you can ensure a smoother experience when managing your investments.
