Times Table 3 as Addition

We know that multiplication can be expressed as form of repeated addition. We can get the next multiple of 3, by adding 3 in the previous multiple of 3. Similarly, we can add 3, n times to get its nth multiple. For Example, 3 × 5 can be written as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3. We can prove this as follows:

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 3 × 1 + 3 × 1 + 3 × 1 + 3 × 1 + 3 × 1

= 3(1 + 1+ 1 + 1+ 1) [using the distributive property of multiplication]

= 3(5)

= 15

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15

Tips to Learn 3 Times Table

The multiplication table of 3 is a basic table. It easy to memorize, but there is a pattern that it follows. Each multiple increases by 3 so it can be learned by skip counting of 3. The multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30.

The last digits of these multiples always repeat and create a pattern. Observe the last digit of the multiples which are 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0, then again the cycle repeats as, 3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0, and it continues like this. This can help in memorizing the 3 times table.

Solved Examples 3 Times Table

Example 1: If Ravi ate 3 almonds a day for 3 consecutive days then the total almonds eaten by him in 3 days.

Solution:

Ravi ate almonds in a day = 3

No. of days he ate almonds = 3

Total almonds eaten by the Kabir = 3 × 3 = 9{Using table of 3}

Total Almonds eaten by Karan is 9

Example 2: If Shivam collects 3 marbles in a day then at the end of a week how much marble he has.

Solution:

Shivam collects marbels in a day = 3 marbles

Days in a week = 7 days

Total marble he had after a week = 7×3 = 21 marbles

Thus, the total marbel he has after one week is 21.

Example 3: Using the table of 3 simplify 3 times 4 plus 3 times 2.

Solution:

By studying the table of Three we know that,

3 times 4 = 3 × 4 = 12

3 times 2 = 3 × 2 = 6

Now,

3 times 4 plus 3 times 2 = 3 × 4 + 3 × 2 = 12 + 6 = 18

Example 4: Using the table of 3 simplify 3 times 4 minus 3 times 3.

Solution:

By studying the table of Three we know that,

3 times 4 = 3 × 4 = 12

3 times 3 = 3 × 3 = 9

Now,

3 times 4 minus 3 times 3 = 3 × 4 – 3 × 3 = 12 – 9 = 3
