Childhood and Education

Pichai Sundararajan, Sundar Pichai was born in an ordinary family in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, on 12th July 1972. He had a very regular upbringing as a child with his father Raghunath Pichai, who was an Electrical Engineer in a private company in Chennai, and his mother Lakshmi, who was a stenographer. Both his parents were very hard working and always shared their experiences with their son. 

Sunder also has a younger brother named Srinivasan Pichai. The family was very down-to-earth and traditional and always prioritized studies over basic comfort. Both the brothers were brought up in a small two-room house and their father always stressed their education and wanted them to do good in life. 

Talking about Sunder Pichai’s education, he was a brilliant student and completed his schooling at a CBSE-affiliated school, Jawahar Vidyalaya situated in Chennai. He did his 12th grade at Vana Vani school which was situated in the vicinity of IIT Madras and cleared it with flying colors. After, completing 12th he cleared the entrance exam of engineering and pursued his degree in metallurgical engineering from IIT, Kharagpur, Kolkata. 

Done with his bachelor’s degree, Pichai did not stop there and went to Stanford University for his Masters in Material Science and Engineering. Being a brilliant student and having a passion for doing something big in life, Sunder went to Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania for his MBA. At Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he was named Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar, respectively.

Personal Life

Sundar Pichai’s personal life is as simple as any normal individual and his interests include football and cricket. He is married to Anjali Pichai a chemical engineer from Kota, Rajasthan. She was also from a middle-class family and always stayed beside him in all his good and bad times and helped to achieve the best in life. 

Sunder Pichai and Anjali met as a classmate while completing their engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and became very good friends while studying there. During the final year of engineering, they came closer and Anjali said YES to Sunder’s proposal, leading to a sweet simple marriage. The couple now lives in Los Altos Hills, (the United States) with their two children Kiran and Kavya Pichai. 

Starting of Career to Becoming Google’s CEO

While starting his career Sunder Pichai worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company. Apart from this, he also tried to give his best in engineering and production management at Applied Materials before joining Google. 

Sunder Pichai’s journey in Google started in the year 2004 – where he began working on trendy products, such as Google Toolbar, Google Gears, and Google Pack before he launched the most popular Google Chrome. Yes you read right, Sunder Pichai was the man behind Google Chrome, and we really wanna thank him. 

Also, with his new innovations with the Google toolbar, he did extraordinary work as the company noted that after its launch the search ratio of visitors and users’ has been increased.  Along with that he also started a free mail service named Gmail in the same year 2004 for a client’s software product. But he overtook the same in 2007, a free mail service launched by Google.

The year 2008 marked the starting of his journey of becoming vice president of the production and development sector, which was followed by the launch of the chrome browser. In line with this, in the year 2009, after the launch of the chrome browser, further developments were done for Chrome OS. After the above-mentioned launches, Sunder Pichai became one of the renowned names in Google and thus came into the eyes of the public at Google presentations in the year 2008. 

In addition to all of the above, Pichai also introduced a new video format, WebM by Google, and also announced the open-sourcing of the new video codec VP8. The list does not end here, in the year 2013 on March, 13 Sundar added Android to the list of Google products, another milestone in his career.
