SAP EWM is a version created by enhancing the SAP Warehouse Management (SAP WM) solution, one of the world’s most popular warehouse management applications, with new features.

What is SAP EWM?

The SAP EWM solution was created to organize and manage goods storage in warehouses, distribution centers, and logistical centers. Its primary goal is to improve efficiency and performance by automating processes such as receiving and storing goods, replenishing inventory levels, managing inventory, and optimizing space allocation. SAP EWM includes more features and functionalities for managing product life cycles and providing a unified view of all supply chain processes.

What is SAP WM?

SAP WM Module is a warehouse management system created by SAP to plan and execute physical stock management and stock movements in warehouses with shelf management.

The SAP WM module is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) module that handles material flows within the ERP system. It manages inventory and associated costs while also providing real-time data on stock levels, movements, and usage. The SAP WM module assists in inventory cost management by tracking the cost of goods sold across multiple locations of a company. It aids in the consolidation of costs and charges by utilizing location-specific costs or cost allocation rules.

Difference between SAP EWM and SAP WM:

Scope Comprehensive, complex warehouse processes Traditional, basic warehouse processes
Flexibility Highly flexible and adaptable Limited flexibility, more rigid structure
Process Automation Advanced automation and optimization Basic automation features
Handling of Complex Processes Yes Limited, suitable for simpler processes
Integration with Other SAP Modules Seamless integration with other SAP modules Integrated, but may require additional effort
RFID and IoT Integration Strong support Limited support
Cross-Docking Support Yes Limited support

Adaptability and Personalization

EWM offers more configurability and flexibility, enabling companies to modify and customize the system to satisfy unique and complicated warehouse needs.

Compared to EWM, WM offers less customization and flexibility options.

Infrastructure Technological

Designed to provide improved compatibility with the newest advancements and technologies, and to effortlessly connect with contemporary SAP platforms such as SAP S/4HANA.

It is often limited in its ability to use newer technology and operates on older SAP ERP systems.

Developed to work in harmony with more recent SAP versions, such as SAP S/4HANA, to improve the synchronization of warehouse operations with other business processes.

Mainly interfaces with previous iterations of SAP ERP or the SAP ERP Central Component (ECC)

In terms of features, SAP EWM is similar to SAP WM, but it provides more customization options, such as warehouse structure and picking/putaway processes. SAP EWM also includes novel concepts like activity zones, Work Centers, and Resources.
SAP considers EWM to be a more robust and versatile alternative to WM. EWM has the same basic core functionalities as WM, but it also includes features such as labor management and internal routing. According to the SAP roadmap, the WM module will no longer be produced and its support period will end in 2025.
