About the launch of the scheme

  • The Ministry Of New and Renewable Energy has introduced a new scheme i.e. Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana focuses on providing free electricity and bringing down the electricity bill of the household in India.
  • The free electricity scheme was earlier announced by the Finance Minister of India Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in her interim budget speech on 1st February 2024.

  • Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi launched this scheme on 15th February 2024.

Process

PM Surya Ghar – Free Electricity Scheme (Muft Bijli Yojana): Eligibility

  • The beneficiary should be an Indian Citizen.
  • The household must own a house with a roof that is suitable for installing solar panels.
  • Annual family income should not exceed Rs 1.5 lakh, ensuring that the scheme targets economically disadvantaged households.
  • The beneficiary must have a valid electricity connection.
  • Families with government employees are not eligible for the scheme, to ensure equality in the distribution of benefits.
  • The beneficiary should not have availed of any other subsidy for solar panels.
  • An Aadhar card linked to the bank account is mandatory to facilitate direct subsidy transfers.

Applicants need to submit the following documents to avail themselves of the scheme’s benefits:

  • Proof of identity and residence (Aadhar card,Pan card ,Ration card etc.)
  • Roof ownership certificate.
  • Document confirming the applicant’s residential address.
  • Verification of the applicant’s annual family income.
  • Proof of current electricity consumption.
  • Additional proof of household identity and income.
  • Contact information for communication purposes.
  • Visual identification of the applicant.
  • Document confirming the linkage of Aadhar with the bank account for subsidy transfer.

  • Under this Scheme, the beneficiaries or households will be given a subsidy to install solar panels on their home rooftops. The Subsidy that the government will provide can cover up to 40% of the total cost of solar panels.
  • It is determined that this scheme will save Rs. 75000 cr/yr of the Government in electricity costs.
  • This scheme is expected to benefit more than 1 crore citizens across India.

PM Surya Ghar – Free Electricity Scheme (Muft Bijli Yojana): Subsidy Structure

The PM Surya Ghar Scheme provides subsidies to encourage residential households to adopt solar energy.

  1. Households using 0-150 units/month will get Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000 for 1-2 kW systems.
  2. Those using 150-300 units/month will receive Rs 60,000 to Rs 78,000 for 2-3 kW systems.
  3. Homes consuming over 300 units/month can install systems above 3 kW, capped at Rs 78,000.

PM Surya Ghar – Free Electricity Scheme (Muft Bijli Yojana): Application Process

Steps to apply for this Scheme -:

Visit the official website. (click here)

  • Provide the following details to register-:
    1. Select your State
    2. Select your Electricity Distribution Company
    3. Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
    4. Enter Mobile Number
    5. Enter Email
  • Log in with your Consumer Number & Mobile Number.
  • Apply for the Rooftop Solar as given in the form.
  • Fill out the online application form.
  • Wait for the feasibility approval from DISCOM.
  • Once you get the feasibility approval install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM.
  • Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for a net meter.
  • After the installation of the net meter and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate a commissioning certificate from the portal.
  • Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a canceled cheque through the portal.
  • You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.
