List of US Governors: In the United States, the chief executive officer of a state or territory is a Governor. The political and ceremonial head of the state is the Governor. A governor’s term in a state varies. S/he has many roles & responsibilities apart from the day-to-day functioning of the states.

There are 50 states in the United States of America. Each state has its own governor, who is the political and ceremonial head of the state. They have day-to-day responsibilities and many other roles to perform in a state. S/he also have the power to veto the laws that are passed by the state legislature. A governor’s term and duties & powers in a state varies.

Additional roles, like being the commander-in-chief of the National Guard when the role is not federalized, may be given to the Governor. A criminal sentence, can also be commuted or pardoned by the Governor. S/he can veto bills.

Office Terms: Governors of US

A governor’s term of office varies from state to state. In most of the states, governor is elected for a four-year term, but in some cases for a two-year term.  Also, in certain states a Governor can be re-elected to be the Governor and serve for another eight years. Governors serve four years in office, for each term except Vermont & New Hampshire where Governors have a 2 year term. In majority of the states and territories, a governor’s tenure is determined by the term limit laws.

Duties & Responsibilities of Governors of US

A governor has many different duties & responsibilities, such as:

  • State officials such as the Secretary of State & Attorney General are appointed
  • Signing or vetoing laws passed by the state legislature
  • Overseeing the state budget
  • Contracts awarded by the state government are approved or disapproved
  • State’s representation on the national stage
