Hey there! So, I recently went through the IBM interview process for the role of Associate System Engineer (ASE), and let me tell you all about it.

Round 1: Coding Challenge

First things first, they threw 2 coding questions my way. The first one was about playing around with strings, which was of easy level. The second challenge got a bit trickier. It involved dynamic programming and arrays, which means solving complex problems by breaking them down into simpler steps. I had to think through my approach, but in the end, I managed to crack it within the stipulated time frame of 50 minutes (approx). This round tested my coding ability on a round!

  • Take time to analyze the question properly. Then, get into logic. Only if you think that the logic works, start your code.
  • If your time is about to end, pass the public test cases, at least. (just to check your luck)

Round 2: English language assessment

Students who cleared the Coding Test were shortlisted for the English language Assessment, which was conducted on the same day. It was a test that required quick thinking and precision. The assessment covered various aspects of English proficiency, including vocabulary, spotting errors, spellings, synonyms, antonyms, and fill-in-the-blanksof.

With negative marking in play, every answer counted, and there was the option to skip questions if you didn’t know the answer. It was a challenge to balance speed and accuracy, but staying focused and composed was key. Despite the time pressure, I tackled each question methodically, ensuring I gave my best shot.

This round not only tested my command of the English language but also my ability to think on my feet.

  • Skip questions even if you have 0.001% doubt. You have lot many questions on your way
  • Be quick

Round 3: Group Discussion

Then came the GD. We were given topics on the spot and had to discuss them as a team. All the other teams were given only 1 topic to discuss. But, We had 2 topics: Android versus iPhone and the impact of social media on society, one after the other. It was interesting to hear different perspectives and work together to come up with solutions. Overall, it felt like a friendly chat with a bit of friendly competition thrown in.

  • Start the conversation by yourself, it impacts
  • Dont be loud . Its a talk
  • Carry a pen and Note the points that strike your mind

Round 4: Final Chat

Finally, I had a one-on-one chat with the HR. They asked about my experience with AI and ChatGPT, which are basically fancy technologies that use artificial intelligence. They also asked about some simple Python stuff, like how I would write basic code to solve common problems. Then we talked about how I approach problem-solving in my projects. It was more like a friendly conversation than a formal interview, which helped me relax and open up.

  • Dont be over formal or informal
  • If you dont know answer, admit it. Thats completely OK
  • Smile – carry this asset

And you know what? I got it! So, to anyone else gearing up for an interview, just remember to stay calm, be yourself, and give it your best shot. You’ve got this!
