Sometimes you need a break from the constant stream of updates, notifications, and distractions that come with Facebook. While permanently deleting your account is an option, consider deactivation as a temporary measure if you think you might want to return to the platform eventually. Here’s how to do it:

How to Deactivate Facebook?

Steps to Deactivate Facebook on a Computer (Web Browser)

  1. Click the downward triangle in the top-right corner of any Facebook page.
  2. Select “Settings & Privacy” and then click “Browser“.
  3. Click on “Your Facebook Information” in the left-side menu.
  4. Select “Deactivation and Deletion“.
  5. Choose “Deactivate Account” and click “Continue to Account Deactivation“.
  6. Provide a reason for deactivating (optional), and adjust additional settings.
  7. Click “Deactivate” and confirm by entering your password.

Steps to Deactivate Facebook on Mobile (Facebook App)

  1. Tap the three horizontal lines menu button (top right or bottom right).
  2. Scroll down and tap “Settings & Privacy“, then “Settings“.
  3. Under “Account Ownership and Control,” tap “Deactivation and Deletion“.
  4. Select “Deactivate Account” and tap “Continue to Account Deactivation“.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions, including providing your password.

Reactivating Your Account: To reactivate your account, simply log back into Facebook using your email and password. Your profile and information will be restored.

What Happens When You Deactivate?

  • Hidden Profile: Your profile, posts, and most of your information become hidden from other users.
  • Messenger Access: You can still use Facebook Messenger.
  • Reactivation: You can reactivate your account at any time by simply logging back in with your usual credentials.
  • Other Accounts: Deactivating Facebook won’t impact accounts you use Facebook login for (like Spotify or games). You may need to contact those services separately.

Note: Deactivation is different from permanent deletion. If you want to completely remove your Facebook presence, you’ll need to choose the “Delete Account” option. Before deactivating, it’s wise to download a copy of your Facebook information. You can find this option in your settings.

If you’re looking for a break from social media, deactivating Facebook is a simple and reversible option. Just remember, you are free to return to your Facebook profile whenever you feel the time is right.
