According to the CEO of Google DeepMind, Gemini, a new AI, is poised to surpass OpenAI’s ChatGPT based on its creative application of AlphaGo techniques.

AlphaGo is built on a method DeepMind invented called reinforcement learning, in which computer programs are taught to tackle challenging tasks requiring decision-making, such as in video games or the game of Go, by repeated efforts and evaluation of their performance.

When Gemini, Google’s next-generation foundation model, was originally shown in May at Google I/O 2023, CEO Sundar Pichai noted, “While still early, we’re already seeing impressive multimodal capabilities not seen in prior models.” Gemini is currently in the development stage.

“At a high level, you can think of Gemini as combining some of the strengths of AlphaGo-type systems with the amazing language capabilities of the large models,” said Hassabis. We also have some fresh developments that will be rather fascinating. 

Gemini is still being developed, which will take several months, according to Hassabis. Tens or hundreds of millions of dollars could be spent on it.

Gemini could be a key component of Google’s response to the danger that ChatGPT and other generative AI technologies pose to its market share. The search company invented many of the methods that made it possible for the current onslaught of innovative AI concepts, but they carefully developed and implemented the resulting products.
