OnePlus was founded by Carl Pei and Pete Lau in the year 2013 only with $300 and a dream of doing something big; it is a Chinese consumer electronics company with its headquarters in Shenzen. The founders wanted to provide the world with the best quality premium smartphones where the customers can experience the best. They adopted the slogan of “Never Settle” where they wanted to convey a message to their customer, to never settle for less as they themselves did not want to compromise the quality.

OnePlus is a brand that has a very high market value and the company became “Zero To Hero” within a few months only. One of the fastest-growing Android smartphone companies OnePlus is best known for its smartphones and officially serves around 34 countries with its world-class services. Founded on 16 December 2013 by Oppo’s former vice presidents Pete Lau and Carl Pei, with the goal of manufacturing high-quality and affordable smartphones in order to give users the best experience in day-to-day life. The first phone of OnePlus was launched in the year 2014 on 23rd April and it was done with the intention of capturing the market of the same standard phone Google Nexus series. Since then the company has launched numerous phones with the best camera qualities. 

About The Founders

Launched on December 16, 2003, the company OnePlus was created by Carl Pei and Pete Lau with the aim of creating something extraordinary. They started the company with only six employees and for cutting the expenses they first launched the phones online same as Google Nexus and Oppo. Also, the company has been tagged as a “Flagship Killer” as it offers the best quality phones which provide high-end features that too without any pressure on the pocket of the customers. 

Lau started his career with Oppo as a hardware engineer and later with his hard work he became the director of Oppo’s Blu-ray division. He also became the head of marketing for his futuristic visions thus eventually becoming the Vice President. After reaching such a high position, Lau was involved in doing something new, that is CyanogenMod, an Android-based operating system for the Oppo N1 smartphone. However, after spending a decade in such a big brand, Lau resigned from the company in November 2013 and went to start his own company OnePlus. 

Now talking about the other founder, Carl Pei is a Swedish-born entrepreneur who is the co-founder of OnePlus along with Pete Lau. Both of them before launching OnePlus worked in Oppo and Pei was subordinate to Lau and worked directly under him. Before OnePlus, Carl also worked at Nokia in the year 2010, he left in three months and joined Oppo. 

Pei and Lau co-founded OnePlus after moving out of Oppo and their first device of OnePlus was very high grossing & the company sold around 1 million units in the year 2014, despite the target of 50,000 only. However, their phones were not available in the complete market still the people took a notice of their product hence, contributing to the success of their company. 

The feature which made the OnePlus favorite among customers was the availability of high-end-specification at a much lower price. It targeted established brands that were already ruling the market such as Samsung and Apple, which provided high specifications at a very high price. The company provided its smartphones with high-quality cameras and the users got impressed with the quality of the pictures and its sleek design. 

Their unique advertising tactics also helped them to increase their sales. Apart from word of mouth, their regular updates on social media handles made them stand out from others. The founders just tried to make a solid customer base and grew slowly towards success. The company also listens to the feedback of their customers which is eventually helping them to build a strong community. Since the year 2014, from the launch of their first phone to 2022, when they launched the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G, the company has achieved heights. 

Furthermore, talking about a few changes in the company then, Carl Pei left the company and started his own venture named “Nothing” in the year 2021, with an aim to provide people with seamless technological products.
