What is Photosynthesis?

Process of Photosynthesis

Light Reaction of Photosynthesis (or) Light-Dependent Reaction

The light response, which only occurs throughout the day when sunlight is present, is the first step of photosynthesis. It occurs in thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts. Photosystems, which are membrane-bound sac-like structures found inside thylakoids, are responsible for collecting light. Photosystems come in two varieties: Photosystem I and Photosystem II.

In the light-dependent reactions, light energy is transformed into NADPH and ATP, which are needed for photosynthesis’ second stage. Two electron-transport chains, water, and ATP are produced during the light reactions.

Dark Reaction of Photosynthesis (or) Light-Independent Reaction

Another name for dark reaction is carbon-fixing reaction. Sugar molecules are created from water and carbon dioxide molecules in a process that is light-independent. Using the NADPH and ATP from the light reaction, the dark reaction takes place in the chloroplast’s stroma. Six carbon dioxide molecules are converted into one sugar molecule, or glucose, by the Calvin cycle, which is fueled by the ATP and NADPH produced during the light reaction. The dark reaction’s chemical equation is as follows:

3CO2 + 6 NADPH + 5H2O + 9ATP → G3P + 2H+ + 6 NADP+ + 9 ADP + 8 Pi

Factors Affecting Photosynthesis

The diagram of photosynthesis process shows the need of several things, including:

  • Light Intensity: A higher rate of photosynthesis is the outcome of increased light intensity.
  • Amount of CO2 present: The rate of photosynthesis is aided by higher carbon dioxide concentrations.
  • Temperature: A temperature range of 25° to 35° C is critical for the effective execution of photosynthesis.
  • Water: Lack of water might cause issues with the absorption of carbon dioxide since it is a crucial component of photosynthesis. Water scarcity causes stomatal openings to refuse to hold onto the water they have stored inside of them.
  • Pollution: The surface of leaves may become coated in particles and industrial contaminants.
