The Central Government of India launched the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (Self-reliant India Mission). This campaign included Rs. 20 lakh economic stimulus package and several reform proposals. The monetary package is equivalent to 10% of India’s GDP. The Prime Minister announced a special financial package & issued a call for “Atmanirbhar Bharat,” or “Self-reliant India,” as part of the relief measures following COVID-19. He pointed out the total cost of this package, including recent government announcements about supporting essential industries.

Background of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan:

India saw the political independence for Swaraj advance during the independence movement (self-governance or self-rule). Tagore pushed India towards academic autonomy with the help of institutions like Visva-Bharati University. As M. S. Swaminathan noted in his youth in the 1930s, “young and old decided to share the fantasy of a free and self-reliant India.”  Purna Swaraj & Swadeshi (self-reliance) were our goals.

The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, acknowledged that slogans like “Atmanirbhar Bharat,” “Make in India,” & “vocal for local” were influenced by Gandhi’s efforts to promote swadeshi in 2022. Currently, long-forgotten pre-independence goals are now being revived, modified, as well as implemented.

What is Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan?

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister, announced the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, or “self-reliant India scheme,” in May 2020. The government’s announced stimulus spending relief package is worth Rs. 20 lakh crores.
