Michel de Nostredame or Nostradamus was a French astrologer, known for his book Les Prophéties that constituted a set of 942 poetic quatrains ostensibly forecasting future events regarding natural calamities, wars, assassinations, and revolutions.

The renowned astrologer has been credited with foretelling almost everything from the rise of Hitler to the assassination of JFK. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, it’s an inarguable fact that there were queer correlations between the predictions of Nostradamus and numerous historical events. But what about the major events that our upcoming future holds? Here are the top 5 Nostradamus predictions that we could expect for the year 2022.

1. Global Warming

Global warming probably shouldn’t be a surprise for us, but the rise in sea temperatures was something that was predicted in 1555 by Nostradamus.

Rising sea levels could drastically affect human activities in the coastal areas. It can erode shores, elevate coastal flooding, deluge low-lying dry land, and wetlands, and raise the flow of saltwater into nearby groundwater aquifers.

The changes in sea level that impact coastal regions include more than merely expanding oceans. Land can rise in certain areas through geological uplift and sediment accumulation. On the other hand, land can sink due to sediment compaction, and erosion that prevent rivers from their natural deposition of sediments.

With temperatures surging globally, food chain complications, and rising sea levels becoming noticeable, is 2022 in which we can expect temperatures to reach their breaking points? The earth is definitely enduring an omnipresent extinction-level event. The deterioration of natural habitats, death of coral reefs, and decreasing number of fish in a majority of global water bodies might be an indication that Nostradamus’ predictions on sea temperature rising could be on the horizon.

2. Rise of Artificial Intelligence

Technology has developed and evolved in such massive proportions over the past few years that it’s almost impossible to predict what kind of transmutations will occur in this domain in the near future. This truly makes it remarkable that Nostradamus predicted the level of impact that artificial intelligence would make on humankind.

Digitization is amplifying human capacities and disrupting age-old human activities at a colossal rate. Code-driven mechanisms have impacted over half of the world’s inhabitants in terms of apt information delivery and connectivity, providing unreal opportunities and potentially detrimental threats. As the ever-evolving algorithm-driven AI continues to spread its roots, will people be better off today, or would they move towards hindrance?

Most experts and industry veterans are optimistic about Artificial Intelligence, and its contribution to the development of the globe, but others express their critical concerns.

Stephen Hawking commented that Artificial Intelligence could be gravely dangerous for humankind. “Technology could out-invent human inventors and innovators, outsmart financial markets, out-manipulate world leaders, and may engineer weapons that are beyond our understanding. While the short-term impact of AI is majorly governed by who controls it, AI’s long-term impact depends on whether it can even be controlled or not”, he says.

3. A Disastrous Earthquake

The third quatrain of Nostradamus’ Centuria III is alleged to predict a massive earthquake in Japan in the year 2022.

In the year 2021, Japan witnessed an aggregate of seven earthquakes of magnitude five or more, the highest in the last few years; as per Statista.

The most intense of them was the Fukushima-ken Oki earthquake. It was a deadly seismic event that occurred offshore east of Tōhoku, Japan. The Mw 7.1 earthquake took place on Saturday at 23:07 JST on 13 February at a shallow depth of 51.9 kilometers. The earthquake earned a maximum JMA intensity of Shindo 7 whereas, on the Mercalli scale, it got a rating of VIII. The earthquake was subsequently followed by several aftershocks in less than an hour, while three of them registered a magnitude of 5.3. The earthquake has been interpreted as an aftershock of the Tōhoku earthquake that took place in 2011, almost ten years before.

4. Rise in Inflation

The inflation surge is another financially gloomy forecast made by Nostradamus for the year 2022.

Inflation in the US peaked at its highest rate in 40 years, with prices surging by 7.5% from a year back. The rise in the consumer price index – which quantifies the costs of an extensive variety of products – was the biggest since February 1982. CPI has risen 0.6% from December, much higher than anticipated but still lower from last October when the rate of inflation rose 0.9% per month.

The sky-high inflation in America has been administered by the ascending demand and a deficit supply caused by Covid-19’s impact on global trade.

Inflation rose the highest due to the increase in the prices of food, electricity, and shelter. The food index had a rise of 0.9% in January followed by a 0.5% rise in December. The energy index soared 0.9% as well (Source: The Guardian). Similar effects of inflation can be seen across the globe.

Would 2022 be worse as far as inflation is concerned?

5. Starvation

In addition to other predictions, one of the key predictions made by Nostradamus is the high amount of starvation that the masses will face in 2022.

A group of 120 non-government entities has allied together in an open letter urging the world leaders to confront the catastrophic global hunger crisis. This is due to a new analysis that says that the number of people likely to be in the exigency of humanitarian assistance could rise by 17% in 2022.

The Global Humanitarian Overview 2022, issued lately by the United Nations Office for OCHA, apprised that 274 million people could be in need of humanitarian support in 2022. This number is up from 235 million people in 2021 and 168 million in 2020.

One of the major causes of humanitarian aid is food insecurity as the number of people at risk of famines has risen 60%. Currently, an estimated 45 million people from 43 nations are at risk of famine.

The prophecies of the seer Nostradamus are equivocal and ambiguous. Some of his predictions have aligned with particular historic events while others have been metaphorical and hypothetical.
