Answer: Death Valley has the highest air temperature record while Lut Desert and Sonoran Desert have the highest surface temperature record.

When talking about the highest temperature record we can answer it in two ways, in terms of highest air temperature and highest surface temperature. In terms of the highest air temperature then Death Valley in California holds the official record for the hottest air temperature ever recorded. In 1913, the temperature here reached 56.7°C (134.1°F) which is the highest air temperature record till now. In terms of the highest surface temperature, the Lut Desert in southeastern Iran and the Sonoran Desert in Mexico-US Border, both hold the official record for the hottest surface temperature ever recorded. In 2005, the temperature in Lut Desert reached 80.8°C (177.4°F), and in 2017, again the same temperature was recorded in the Sonoran Desert.

In short, the hottest places on earth are Death Valley in California (highest air temperature), Lut Desert in Iran and Sonoran Desert in Mexico-US Border (highest surface temperature).
