The need of calculating area has existed since time immemorial; ever since people started owning land for farming and other purposes, the need for an objective method for calculating how much area or how much total land someone owns. After a lot of years, we finally came up with a standard method for calculating area in terms of some special mathematical units. The reason for the unitary calculation of area is that it forms a worldwide standard for everyone to follow.

Note: For comparing the magnitude of two mathematical values their units must be the same. So for calculating the area and comparing it we need to make sure that we maintain same units throughout.

Mathematically the area can be defined as the space occupied by a flat shape or the surface of an object.  The area of a figure is the number of unit squares that cover the surface of a closed figure. The area is measured in square units such as square centimeters, square feet, square inches, etc.  

Conversion from Square Meter To Acre

The SI unit of area is the meter square, often known as (meter)2. It is defined as the area of a square with one-meter sides, i.e., each side is of length one meter; here, a meter is presently defined as the distance traveled by light in 1/300,000,000 of a second as stated in the unit m/s. For this purpose, suppose we have a rectangular surface given now, for finding the area in meter square, we first need to convert the length of the adjacent sides into meter and then multiply them both to find the area in desired units. The square meter is an uncommon method of calculating area. It is not used as a common unit due to the fact that for small area calculation requirements, we prefer using feet2, whereas, for larger calculations, we use units such as acre or hectare.

An acre (ac) is a unit of area used in the measurement of the land of a considerably large area. It is defined as the area of 1 chain (66 feet) by 1 furlong (660 feet), which is equal to precisely 1/640 of a square mile, 43,560 square feet, or exactly 4046.864224 square meters. The acre happens to be the most widely used unit for describing the magnitude of any area of any land or field etc. It is useful in finding direct conversions as it can be simply converted into mile2 by simply dividing by 640.

The conversion between the two units is illustrated below; as seen above, the value of 1 acre is defined as,

1 acre = 66 feet Ã— 660 feet

Now a feet is equal to somewhere around 0.3 meter or 0.3048 meters to be exact. 

Hence, 66 feet × 660 feet = 4046.8564224 square meters.

And 1 meter2 = 1 meter2 

Thus for converting square meter to acre we can use the relation

Sample Questions

Question 1: Suppose a farmer owns 10,000 square meters of land. Find how much land he owns in acres.

Solution:

Given:  Area of the land = 10,000 m2

10,000 m2\frac{10,000}{4046.8564224}  .

10,000 m2 = 2.4710538147 acre.

Question 2: The total land owned by a person is 12,486 square meters. Find out how much land he owns in acres. 

Solution:

Given: Area of the land = 12,486 m2

12486 m2 = \frac{12,486}{4046.8564224}   .

12486 m2 = 3.0853578 acre.

Question 3: A person who owns a piece of land with a total area of 14560 square meters, find the cost of plowing the land if it costs 5000/ acre to plow.

Solution:

Given:  Area of the land = 14560 m2

14560 m2 = \frac{14560}{4046.8564224}  

14560 m2 = 3.5978544 acre.

So the total cost of ploughing the land will be = 5000 Ã— 3.5978544 = Rs 17,989.272

So the total cost of ploughing the land will be Rs 17,989.272.

Question 4: Suppose there exists a piece of land with dimensions of 105 m and 180 m. Find the area of this field in acres.

Solution:

Given: Area of the land = 105 Ã— 180 m2.

Area in acres = \frac{105 \times 180}{4046.8564224}  .

So the area in acres = 4.67029 acre.

Question 5: A man owns two pieces of land equal to 10000 and 13000 m2, respectively. Find the total land owned by this man in acres.

Solution:

Total area = (10000 + 13000) m2

Area in acres = \frac{23000}{4046.8564224}  .

So the area in acres = 5.6834 acre.

Question 6: Suppose the total land owned by a person is 14.2 acres. How much land does he own in square meters?

Solution:

Land owned in acres = 14.2

So land owned in square meters = 14.2 Ã— 4046.8564224

= 57,465.36122648 m2

Question 7: It is given that the total land owned by a person is 16.25 acres. How much land does he own in square meters?

Solution:

Land owned in acres = 16.25

So land owned in square meters = 16.25 Ã— 4046.8564224

= 65,761.4168965 m2
