MPEG full form is Moving Picture Experts Group. It is a working group of agencies to set standards for audio / video encoding and transmission. Develops audio video file formats known as MPEG.
History of MPEG :
MPEG was set up in January 1988 by Leonardo Chiariglione and Hiroshi Yasuda. The first meeting took place in Ottawa, Canada in May 1988. Some of the released version of MPEG are:
- MPEG-1
- MPEG-2
- MPEG-3
- MPEG-4
- MPEG-7
- MPEG-21 and more
Function of MPEG :
- Storing audios in Compact disc(CD).
- Storing of videos on digital video tapes.
Working of MPEG :
MPEG follows an algorithm in which the data are compressed into small bits, so that they can be easily transmitted and decompressed and then encoded using “Discrete Cosine Transform”.The compression rate of MPEG is high because it doesn’t store the complete frame, it only stores the changes that has been done to the frames.Hence it reduce the size of overall file.
Advantages of MPEG :
- MPEG files produces duplicate of the original files which are of very high quality.
- MPEG files format are compatible with most web browsers and can run on various platforms.
Disadvantages of MPEG :
- Low compression ratio.
- Larger file sizes.
- Longer to open as the file size is large.
