In this article, we will cover one of the topics of this section i.e List of State Political Parties in India. This is an important topic; if students read it comprehensively, it will enhance their preparation and the possibility of their selection.
Political Party: An Introduction
- Political parties are registered by the Electoral Commission for electoral purposes and are recognized as federal or state parties based on their election results.
- The other parties are simply declared as unrecognized registered parties.
- Recognition determines their right to certain privileges such as the assignment of party symbols, allocation of time for political broadcasts on radio and television stations, and access to electoral rolls.
- Each national party and state party is assigned a symbol reserved for national or state use only. In other words, the Commission designates certain symbols as “reserved symbols” intended for candidates proposed by recognized parties.
Criteria for Becoming a State Party:
A party is recognized as a State Party if it meets any of the following requirements:
- If it obtains at least 6% of the valid votes in a general election to the Lok Sabha or the State Legislative Assembly and also at least 1 seat in the Lok Sabha or 2 seats in the state legislature.
- If he wins, at least 8% of the valid votes will be cast in a general election held in the Lok Sabha or Legislative Assembly of a state.
- If it wins at least 3% of the total number of seats in a state’s legislature or 3 seats in the legislature, whichever is greater.
- If it wins at least 1 seat in the Lok Sabha out of 25 seats allotted to states in the Lok Sabha.
- The Electoral Commission currently recognizes 64 political parties as state political parties.
