QA – Placement Quizzes | Age | Question 4

The age of a father was 4 times his son’s age 8 years back. After 8 years, the father will be twice as old as his son. Find out the present ages of father and son.
(A) 16 and 40 years
(B) 14 and 45 years
(C) 10 and 42 years
(D) 13 and 41 years

Answer: (A)
Explanation: Let the son be x years old and the father be y years old. Then,
y-8 = 4(x-8) and y+8 = 2(x+8).
Subtracting the first equation from the second, we get
(y+8) – (y-8) = (2x+16) – (4x-32)
⇒ 16 = -2x + 48
⇒ 2x = 32 ⇒ x = 16.
But, y-8 = 4(x-8). So,
y = 4(x-8) + 8 = 40.
Therefore, the present ages are 16 and 40 years.
