What is an MP3 Format?

MP3 stands for the audio file format. Files with the mp3 extension are digitally encoded audio file formats based on the MPEG-1 Audio Layer III or MPEG-2 Audio Layer III. It was created by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and uses Layer 3 audio compression. The MP3 file format compresses to one-tenth the size of WAV or AIF files. An MP3 file is made up of MP3 frames, which each contain a header and a data block. The frames are not independent and cannot be extracted at random frame boundaries. The file’s data blocks contain audio information such as frequencies and amplitudes. The sync word in the header indicates the beginning of a valid frame. This is followed by three bits, with the first indicating that it is an MPEG standard and the remaining two indicating that layer 3 is used; thus, MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 or MP3.
