I recently appeared for both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. These competitive exams are crucial for engineering aspirants like me, and I’d like to share my experience.
First, let me start with my preparation:
Study Materials and Strategies:
Books and Resources:
- Physics: Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma and Cengage.
- Chemistry: NCERT and Inorganic Chemistry by J.D. Lee.
- Mathematics: Cengage.
Coaching Institute materials (VMC in my case) proved to be extremely useful along with the above-mentioned books. I would even say that leaving one or two books mentioned above but practising the coaching material would also be a great choice.
Study Schedule:
- I created a detailed study plan that covered all topics. Balancing subjects was crucial. Daily Consistency was my mantra. Even if you feel like not doing anything today, just take out chemistry and start reading it, don’t leave any day unutilized.
- Regular mock tests helped me gauge my progress and identify weak areas.
IMPORTANT: Studying 2 hours regularly for five days is much better and effective than studying for 10 hours on one day and then not studying for the next 2-3 days
Revision Techniques:
- Focused on understanding the underlying concepts rather than rote memorization. Practice numerical only after understanding the concept.
- Solving Previous Years’ Papers is crucial. It helps to understand the exam pattern and practice time management.
Exam Day Experience:
- The exam centre was bustling with nervous energy. Rows of students, all with the same goal.
- Arrive early to avoid any last-minute stress. The exam hall was well-organized.
Challenges:
- Time Pressure: Solving complex problems within the time limit was tough.
- Nervousness: My heart raced during the initial minutes.
I would suggest giving one devoting 1 hour to physics and chemistry and then devoting the remaining two hours to mathematics.
- Physics Numerical: Were not difficult, had to look out for silly mistakes
- I took a deep breath, reminded myself of my preparation, and focused on one question at a time.
- I skipped difficult questions initially and returned to them later.
- Staying calm was crucial.
Insights:
- Practice Matters: Consistent practice and solving diverse problems are key.
- Time Management: Mock tests helped me manage time effectively.
- Believe in Yourself: Confidence matters; trust your preparation.
Advice for Future Test-Takers:
- Start early; don’t procrastinate.
- Understand concepts deeply.
- Stay positive and maintain a healthy routine.
