Back in February 2022, Gojek India graced our college with an exciting internship opportunity in the domain of Data Science. The process kicked off with a two-stage evaluation, commencing with an Online Test round, succeeded by a Technical Interview round. The hunt was on for individuals adept in computer vision, well-versed in natural language processing, and possessing a knack for SQL/database operations coupled with adeptness in Python programming. This snippet encapsulates my firsthand experience of the Data Science internship interview journey.
1. Candidate Shortlisting :
The journey commenced with an online assessment organized by Gojek. This evaluative phase encompassed three distinctive segments: a section comprising Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), a data-science programming challenge, and a task involving SQL queries. It’s of significance to highlight that Gojek’s meticulous shortlisting process included a thorough review of applicants’ CVs before inviting them to participate in the online assessment.
2. Technical Round
This phase of the interview aimed at evaluating your foundational grasp of Programming, as well as your knowledge of machine learning and deep learning essentials along with their theoretical foundations. Additionally, they were keen on assessing your proficiency in SQL, given its indispensable role in the initial stages of your work with data here. This round extended for approximately 1 to 1.25 hours. The elements I’ve delineated here closely align with the manner in which they were conveyed during the interview.
- The interview commenced with the classic “Tell me about yourself” question, allowing me to encapsulate my background and aspirations within a 2-3 minute window.
- The interviewer proceeded to explore my resume, prompting me to delve into one of the projects listed. While I began explaining, he directed me to articulate the project’s What, How, and Why aspects. This prompted me to elucidate its purpose and execution in a coherent and comprehensive manner.
- Asked basic questions regarding SQL query (join and order of clauses, aggregate function)
- how to check whether the distribution is Normal distribution or not.
- Statistics question(hypothesis testing, p-test, t-test I clearly said I don’t know)
- He asked further questions on the metric of my project(which I explained in starting), and why that metric only formula.
- Further, asked which algorithm you used. Asked for in-depth maths also.
- Machine Learning questions about different algorithms and underlying maths(linear regression, logistic regression with objective function, sigmoid activation function)
- How to find an outlier(Box-plot, I don’t know at that time he explains to me)
- Bias-Variance & overfitting-underfitting
- Imbalanced dataset metric(precision,recall,f1 score)
- Deep learning basic questions about Neural networks, convolution, and backpropagation.
Although I felt quite nervous throughout the interview process, the reassuring words from the interviewer at the conclusion had an immediate calming effect. They remarked, “You possess a comprehensive grasp of the concepts, so just relax.” This feedback not only eased my anxiety but also brought a sense of happiness. Notably, our intern selection process concluded without a separate HR round. Thus, my journey through the intern selection process culminated on a positive note.
